Default Nube does it again 2008 RAM

[/IMG]Just got back yesterday from my short sheep trip. Glad it was short because I hurt in a bad way. I have never had to chase a ram around so much to finally kill him.
After a very long bike ride and long hike I got into camp and got things set up. I had a short hike and found the rams on a Sunday. I can't hunt there on Sunday so I waited till the next morning. There were 16 rams and probably about 6 were legal. I had to hike over one mountain to try and get on top of them with no success so I had to go all the way around and to find out half way through the stalk they got spooked into another valley. I had to go over another mountain again to get to them. I left camp at 8 am and killed it at about 5 pm. That's the short story.
Shots were 330 yard and I admitt I didn't shoot well with 5 holes in him by the time he was dead. I have never had a sheep take that much lead before. I got back to camp at about 9:30 at night and very sore.
There were a couple other rams that were I think bigger but were broomed off and my tripod on my spotting scope was broken to really get a good look at them. They were milling around and ready to take off and I could see this one was legal for sure but was a little skinny with small bases but I figured it was better than nothing. I have to leave a few to get big for you boys.
Here is Ram #7 for me

Nice ram Nube, just curious as to why you couldn't hunt on Sunday.

Quite a few of the WMU's for Sheep hunting are not open for Sunday hunting. And besides, when you work like that you need a day to rest!

Congrats Nube, I got my first ram this year and it still hasn't registered. Seems to good to be true.

What length are the horns out of curiosity?

As far as I remember I could not hunt in there on Sunday and didn't check before I left but I think it was still closed on Sundays from when the regs first came out. It wouldn't have mattered too much because I wouldn't have bothered after getting in there the first day and being so tired from just getting in.

Horn lenght on the long horn was 38". He is long but I t still ain't no bruiser either. Too me it doesn't really matter all that much. A dead sheep is a dead sheep and is something to be proud of. They all have their own story to them all and they all take work to get and it is just a blast to be on the mountains and to watch them. They truly are the most awseomest creature to watch and find.

I shot him with the 7mm stw. 140gr

Shooter, the gun does bite back at times when you are shooting at obscene angle and you don't have the butt of the gun tucked in. I just tell guys I had a fight with a tree branch and lost. ( that happened as well by the way a few times)

Score means little to me as well. Just curious. I nailed it at 38, I can't believe it!

He did a nice job of keeping his lamb tips.

Nube,
No need to explain. It just brought back a few memories for me. My first elk ever, I got nailed hard. I think I had more blood on my face then my hands had from gutting the elk. It too was a steep uphill prone shot. Just makes for great memories. I still have the scar from it ten years later.

That's a really nice ram nube. Lamb tips on a big ram like that are very cool. Good job.

Default Awsome Ram nube

Great job on a beautiful Ram Nube. I really like how nobby he is near the base. I had to laugh when I read your story. It was like dejavue of my sheep hunt this year. It felt like some higher power was at work opposing my efforts, but you know what they say about perseverance. I have a way to go to catch you. Got # 4 this fall. Hard to tell from the photo's, but how old is he?( I'd say 8 1/2 but just a rough guess)Great Ram again man!

Just got him plugged yesterday and the CO said that he has yet to use the square on any rams comming in this year. That is good to see that guys are getting some of the bigger ones. I also got him aged at 6 and a half which was a surprise to see such a young ram growing good horns. It looks like they have had good growth the last few years and there should continue to be good sheep hunting in the next little while because of it.
All I need to do now is pick a taxidermist. I might try to find someone different than my usual guy.

Very nice! Those are good horns for 6 1/2. Mine was 6 1/2, but shorter and less mass than yours.

I've given up for the year. Was out the last two days. Saw nothing on Wednesday, and finally found a few groups on the mountain across the valley, about 4 clicks away as the crow flies, and of course three thousand feet down and up. Through the scope and the heat mirages there appeared to be a least one ram in the one group... but he didn't strike me as a cranker. They were on the move too, and disappeared around the bend after a while.

On the mountain I was on I found no fresh sign, snow that had accumulated on the sheep trails was untouched. I found two sets of human tracks in the snow on the main trail in, likely other hunters that were there not long ago. Fresh grizzly scat on the trail as well, it hadn't frozen yet.

I was amazed at the number of horse trailers and road hunters in 404. On a Wednesday.

So.... contrary to Nube, I haven't figured it out yet, sheep hunting. I'll try again next year.

So it's time for elk now.... I found a five by five, but no six pointer.

Frans
