Default Backing Online

Just wondering if anyone has ordered backing online before. If so what websites have worked well for you? I just treated myself to a new reel and am looking to get a unique colour of backing to go with it.

I wouldn't bother ordering online. Just go to Cabelas, or Bass Pro or Wholesale Sports and have them put some bulk backing on your reel. Its way cheaper than buying a 100 or 200 yard spool. Colors are red, white, orange or chartreuse. Orange is my favorite.

For color I would suggest something different than the fly line, so orange is likely good for anything other than an orange fly line, for example.

I agree, from what I saw it did seem a lot cheaper just to go the cabelas route as I dont need to buy in bulk. And wow does that blue backing ever look slick on your setup goldscud.
Thanks for the input fellas, I think ill end up just heading over to cabelas to find some red backing.

I use the "red" sometimes to identify spools, but found the color bleeds into my fly line. Not really a big deal, but it made 10 ft. or so of the backing end of my yellow line turn orange. Just so you know. May have been the type (brand) of backing. Dunno.

Default Gouges

Goldscud,

Have you noticed that the braid has gouged a groove in your guides? I was told (warned) that this happens with braid...

Braid works great, I use PP in 75m of 10lb for my 3wt. I have professional gel spun backing for my loop speed runner for saltwater and have 300m on it. If you do go foreign make sure you match PE with pounds properly.
Also rio makes a red and yellow indicator backing which looks cool af.

Uberfly, it is incredibly rare that I ever let a fish take me to backing so my guides are fine. Only fish over 5lb get the chance...and there aren't many of those around these parts
