AO hunting weekend camp.
We are often talking about "get togethers".
What I have been thinking about is a location for a camp where guys could throw up a tent or park an RV and do some hunting close by.
Most guys are looking for a big buck in Nov., looking for an elk in Sept. Looking for a moose in early Oct. or Nov. (split season areas).
Mid to late Oct. the days are not too short, the weather could be nice for camping (or not). An area open for Supplemental White-tail or with some antlerless permits (draw) would be good as there would be a no pressure meat hunt opportunity.
To cut down on travel maybe we could do a sout WMU a central one and a north one.
Any ideas on times and locations?

Great idea!
How about north foothills area, like caroline, sundre, nordegg or alike? Thats resonably accessible for people from calgary, red deer, edmonton and everything within a 3 hr radius north of edm?
I am relatively new to the forum, but would sign up for an AO camp in a heartbeat, if timing works

Could you imagine the fights?
People decrying each other for 'scoping them'.... Others going after each other for having 'A' beer at camp in the evening.... The meat hunters vs. the trophy hunters.... quaders vs. hikers.... oh the humanity!
Count me IN!

SouthWest, west or north of Edmonton would work for me.

A hunting get-together of AO members would turn into a shootout that would make the OK corral look like a tea party !!

So far the only serious suggestions have been for "Nordegg-Sundre-Caroline area and WMU 429.
GP area is a little far north for most I think. Though if there were enough interested in one in GP area then someone from up there shpuld step up and do a little organizing.
WMU 328 will be open for White-tail male or female General tag and female Supplemental tag. Sept. 17th and on. It will be open for 3 point Elk on General tag.
It is draw for moose and mule deer buck. (no anlerless mule deer draw)
It is a large zone with the trunk road on the west side and the Sunchild/O'chiese road on the east side. Highway #11 on the south (boundry is actually the the North Sask. river) and the Brazeau river on the north.
There is plenty of access roads as oil/gas and logging have opened it up. Plenty of old cutblocks, siesmic lines and pipelines.
All we need is a place to camp and put up a BIG LONG meat pole where we can hang a whole lot of game and take some pictures like you see of the good old days when a group of hunters got together to get their winters meat.
P.S. I think we should be able to put our differnces aside and just be hunters getting along. Around the fire in the evening we can "talk" about the "best deer rifle/cartridge' and the "best all around hunting gun" and the "best all around beer". But no politics, religion, global warming, ACA, Grizzly numbers.....

do we want to stay in the bush or in a campground?? there are a few nice campgrounds off the forestry trunk rd.
pembina forks campgound. is on the forestry rd where the elk river rd joins that way you can hunt 2 wmus
339 general whitetail - general elk - general mule? -and supp whitetail doe -
437 general whitetail - general elk - mule draw

339 would be good. A bonus to have it open for general male mule deer.
Anyone know of a good big clearing where 10 or 15 camping rigs could fit?
Second weekend in Oct. is Thanks Giving weekend. (9,10,11,12) I am usually hunting near inlaws in the north and eating turkey 11 or 12. And watching Eskimos beat on Stampeders.
Third weekend is 17,18,19 would be a whole lot better.

I camped at a site by the Brazeau river in 339 last year (not sure if the campground has a name). There was lots of room there. Even had a couple meat poles already set up.
We'll see if this map link works:
http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?hl=en&...ed43b819f74300
I also left my poles there so as long as nobody burned them as firewood, it'd be pretty easy for me to set up my wall tent.

Looks like your camp was near the elk river. Was there room for a good number of tents or trailers? Was the ground "firm"?
Looks like a good deal of cutblocks and openings around the area. Unless someone comes up with something better, I'd like to give this area a try. Maybe I'll head up that way to have a look. I do have a bear tag in my pocket.
