My remington 597 vs my 10-22
Picked up a new remington 597 the other day and decided to see if it was any good.
All I can say is wow! It's a tack driver, at 75m I can keep 4 out of 5 golden bullets in the same nickel sized grouping!
Which I thought was impossible for a 22lr....
I love how the bolt stays open after the last shot as well!
Also it has yet to jam(about 100 rnds) or fail to fire or fail to eject unlike my 10-22 which is 1 in 20 or worse (might need upgrades??)
Either way I'm pretty happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good 22.

I was contemplating a 597 magnum. I have a 10-22 takedown which is good enough for offhand shots on shotgun hulls out at 50ish yards with the stock ironsights. I'm a .410 guy for grouse but I hear a lot of folks use rimfires for headshots.
it's good to hear good things about the remmy. I can't wait to hear the long term report. My ruger has at least 3000 rounds down the pipe and my brother in law has one he's pushed past 5000 and he bought it used. I've had maybe 2 or 3 stovepipes with cheep ammo and Mike went 2000 rounds without cleaning and never complained about any malfunctions. Nothing has broken on either.
Side note: I'd like to see a scout scope rail option on the takedown. I've been toying with a custom build... 2.75 burris. Intriguing to say the least.
Rambling. Sorry.
Colin

That's awesome, I have a 597 heavy barrel, it's a tack driver as well. I have just about 1500 rounds of bulk federal 525 .22lr through it with out cleaning (not that I recommend it or anything) and it's still functioning flawlessly.
Only fails to eject sometimes when using the Aguila sniper subsonic 60 grain 22 ammo. (Which is some pretty accurate ammo out of mine!) and that is a short shell with a over sized projectile making it 22lr sized

I think ruger gave up on the magnum 10-22. Yeah it'll cost more to produce with reliability but the market is there. I fired a sten gun in full auto last time I was in Vegas. It's a straight blow-back in 9mm. The brits never seemed to complain about them.

I purchased my HB for 250.00 like most I bet. It is unbelievable, I've had a couple problems cause of cheaper ammo but a lot less then my 10/22. I quit using my take down so I sold it and I plan on buying a second HB or a WMR.
A friend of mine has a custom 10/22 that was 1200 dollars if my memory is correct. We we're out popping gophers and he had so many problems. Feeding problems, ejecting problems, had to borrow my pocket knife twice to do something over there when I just kept plucking away. At that time I was using my HMR and left the HB at home.
Great guns, just makes me more proud of all the Remington's I have in my locker.

Almost thinking of selling my 10-22 and getting another 597! So nice not having to fix jams all the time.... Maybe a upgraded extractor and some more break in time might help? Who knows....

Love em!
Have 3 597's in the safe, me and each of my boys love shooting them. With a good cleaning and some minor tweeking they all function great. I like to polish the contact surfaces on the bolt, the rails and make sure the rail screws are not over tightened. All of ours have upgraded VQ target hammers which make the pull lighter and more crisp. Ours like Federal blue box and CCI mini-mags.
If you are looking for some info on these great 22's look up Rimfire central, great site.

My son and I went shooting rabbits with David. Made me want to buy a 597 for my son.

597
I have 3 597's one VTR which I love, a stainless in an archangel stock that's nice and light and one in a Boyd's thumb hole stock and their great shooters and will eat almost anything I feed them without a problem. I also have a 10/22 which I enjoy having the extras like speed loaders and drums. There just seems to be a lot more accessories available for the ruger although the VTR takes AR stocks and grips. All and all I prefer the Remington and glad too see I'm not alone.

Right on! I was realllllllly unsure of buying one but now I'm glad I did!
Has anyone used the aftermarket 30 round mags? I'd like to get one or trade one of my 10-22 steel lips for one.

I've had nothing but trouble with the 30 rnd. mags, black or clear. If they had made them 20 rnd. and straight, they would have had something. The 30 rnd. banana mags make them awkward to carry and impossible to shoot out the truck window. Uhmm... not that I ever did that...I only load about 22 rnds. in them cause the first ones jam otherwise. I'm sticking with the 10 rnd. mags.

They're a little tricky to reassemble after a full strip down.
Also keep an eye on the extractor assembly, some want to fly apart - maybe due to a roughly stamped extractor.
