No north american origin for the 410 as it was well known as the garden gun in England and europe and wasnt brought to north america until after the first world war in about 1919. Previous to that Stevens company had used a similar bore size on the 44-40 and invented a 44 shot (smooth bore) dedicated to brass shotshells in about 1913.

Went out with my New Henry .410 lever this year. I spent a little time testing and found a Browning Improved Mod midas choke and the Federal Gameshock 2.5” #6 made for a nice even pattern at 25yds. Tight enough that I could make headshots if I was shooting birds on the ground but I got a couple on the wing without a miss as well.

Default Who else hunts with a .410

New to this site, thought I'd jump in and add my 2 cents - I hunt with 5 other guys at our camp in Northern Ontario, lots of bush chickens, we all use .410's, can't say that we never miss though, I have 2 that are my go to shooters, a bolt action Mossberg and a Stoeger Condor 1.

I use a 20 SXS i bought off a guy on here, and a 12 SXS that i love for latter in the season. I have been looking for a SXS 410 for some time now but like lots of you said, its mostly nostalgia for me. I just want one lol

I hunt upland birds a lot - occasionally with a .410 (model 42 Winchester). The bonus of me using a .410 is that very little time is required at the end of the day for cleaning birds.

My .410/.22 Savage is one of my favorite guns. Over the years that $200 gun show special has gotten me more grouse than I can shake a stick at.

I have and rebuilt an enfield RFI .410. I use it for squirrel, rabbit, grouse, skunk etc. Super fun was heavy to carry but now with a sling, it's a fun rifle to shoot.

I have been looking as well, but the only ones I ever see are Stoeger and Baikal. Huglu and Yildez might be OK but I have not seen any recently.

I had a Stevens once. Really pretty little gun but the left bore patterned way right and the right patterned way left. I sold it to a fellow that did not care how it patterned but just wanted it.

One thing that I have found out about the .410 shotguns....I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if I were standing inside of it.

But I do have one, or should I say "my wife does". It's passed down from her grandmother. A horrible bolt action think with an ugly adjustable choke. I hate it so much, I don't ever look at it and forget what breed it is, Mossberg I think. I did sell a SxS Iver Johnson a while back that I had restored. Nothing special, but not as horrible as the bolt action.

The only use out of that bolt action 410 I ever got was to dispatch pigeons out of a Hutterite pig barn.

In my opinion a .410 is good for snakes, nothing else. I hunted with a guy - a good shot mind you, an experienced shooter - who ground-sluiced a grouse. He had to shoot it twice.

I grew up shooting ruffed and spruce grouse with a 410, work for rabbits too. Its a good bush gun, not so much in the open. I've used it on sharps, but I decided to upgrade to a 20 a couple years back for the extra range and shot density for the sharps and pheasant. Like hunting big game with a smaller cartridge, know the limits of the gun and practice.

I have one that I received as a gift from a very good friend.

It's become our go-to grouse gun. The kids really enjoy using it, and it's also been helpful to encourage some of the more timid shooters to become accustomed to handling/shooting a shotgun.

I have an old Mossberg 510 in 4.10 that my dad bought new in the mid 70's. Its nothing special, but it was his. In the late 90s and early 00's I would take it to deer camp and occasionally got some chickens with it. My daughter learned to shoot with it as I didn't have a .22 at the time. Good memories, but not alot of game taken with it. Dad bought it because raccoons would take chickens from the henhouse and go under it or bins. The 4.10 would dispatch them without damaging the floorboards.

I like .410s. My two are a CZ/Huglu Bobwhite, twin triggers and straight grip stock and a beautiful Winchester .42 built in '58 with a Simons rib and nice wood.

I've taken a limit of wild pheasants opening day in South Dakota a dozen years ago with the CZ. A great pointing dog, broadside shots only with the pheasant's head and ring visible at 20 yards or so led to no missed/wounded birds. After opening day I went back to the 16 ga SxS as going away birds with the .410 are not a good plan. The .410 goes ruffed grouse hunting with the dog on occasion as well.

I like to shoot skeet and some sporting targets with the .410 as well. But they aren't a good beginner's gun!

And that is the problem, people give a new shooter a 410, but a 410 is much better suited to an experienced wing shooter.

Shot a lot of bush chickens with a .410 single shot Baikal when I was a kid, it usually got the job done. My Dad still has it and I'm hoping my kids can try it on chickens soon.....
