Never had a morel before, what do they taste like or are they totally unique?

With the rain this weekend and now the forecast this week looks like all sun, there should be some popping up this week.

We went out Saturday and found a couple then Sunday with a raging hangover I went for one last look and lo and behold.... they were popping. I think today and tomorrow in the Rimbey area will be golden.

Do verpas come out earlier than morels?
I had a look for about an hour in Fish Creek park today but found nothing...though admittedly, I have never attempted before and don't really know what I'm doing! I looked along the edges of trees areas, looking for signs of moss and deadfall...but no luck.

I picked them all my life in Ontario, BC, and now Alberta. I always look for a hollow from the stem up to the cap, a hollow interior is a key so cut em in half. Seamless cap attachment, the cap moves directly into the stalk. Dad always said look for longer than wide so not short and squat.
Vepa's stem is usually filled with a cotton-like fluffy fibrous material that you won’t find in a true morel. If in doubt, throw it out.
True Moral.

Yes. But this doesn't answer the question.
I agree with the others, Your previous photos show what mostly look like a pile Half-free morels (Morchella semilibera) and/or Verpas.
Note how the cap on many of your shrooms has a free bottom edge and inverts back up before attaching to the stalk.
Regardless, you have a pile of good eats.
Just be careful with the Verpas, special precautions on cooking and eating apply.

I agree these are true morels in this photo, but these are different than most (or all) seen in your first picture of the pile. Either way, nice haul, and morels can't be far behind if you're finding this many verpa!

Morel mushrooms
Has anyone ever found any in the Viking/Killam area? Don’t think I’ve ever seen any around here? I remember picking them around Maemo Beach when I was younger.

Cooking Lake
Tried finding some Morels (first attempt ever) around Islet Lake staging area on May 31. Three of us tromped around the bush with zero success.
