Default Question on 24V system for Minn Kota

Is anyone here running four 6 volt batteries instead of two 12 volt batteries to run their Minn Kota? If so, how is it working for you?

I am running 2 12's for mine.
I can't imagine that you would want 4 batteries in the boat when 2 would do, both weight and price wise.

If you are currently running out of battery capacity before your fishing day is over and you want to extend your day they are a great option. If you have the space on board. If you know for sure that the 12 volt batteries you currently are using are not defective. You can definitely get a substantial increase in reserve capacity.

I had two 12v batteries that were junk so I was going to get two more. I bought a couple 6v batteries for my travel trailer, but I sold the trailer and still have the two brand new, never charged batteries. So, I can:

A) Buy two new 12v deep cell batteries for my boat

Or

B) Buy two new 6v deep cell batteries to match the two I already have and use all 4.

It's a Lund Pro Sport 1700 so I have room for all 4 batteries under the front console, 2 under each side. I don't think I'll notice the weight of 2 extra batteries.

If you have a place to mount them go with the 6 volts. Especially if you fish in remote campgrounds without power or a generator. In a boat that size you should get several days of moderate use.

Go with 4 6V

Electric power jacks (Raymond 102, or Crown WP, Yale, Toyota...) are 24 V. These are used to lift 4500#s all day long and typically last 6 hours on one charge. I've never looked into why, but these use 4x6V batteries and I'm sure there is an advantage over 2 12v.

The 6 volt batteries in my 5th wheel are several inches taller than any of my 12 volt batteries. I would think this would translate into extra capacity. Going to a deep cycle should be a good idea. You can charge them as two 12 volts so a two bank charger is all you need. But if you do that, check your voltages from time to time to make sure one of your batteries isn't getting lazy.
