Default ATTN: Hermitige Dog Park Users!

Today at around 4:15 pm while walking my dog in the Hermitage Dog Park someone on a bicycle wearing black pants, red t shirt, red ball cap and a black back pack passed mequickly from the rear and threw a handful of bakers chocolate in front of my dog. This occurred near the access to river area past the outfall. Thankfully my dog was on the leash so it couldn't eat any it. I picked up 4 pieces of chocolate from the trail and continued on my way. Farther down the trail found more pieces of chocolate and picked them up as well. At the farther end I came across someone else walking their dog who told me the same thing happened to them. By the time I had finished the loop I had collected about half a poop bag full of chocolate. I can not be sure I collected all of or if there is any off the trails.

If anyone else happened to witness this please call EPS especially if you happened to see the persons face or can add details. If you walk your dog there please watch your dog carefully. Lastly, I am not much of a social media user please so pass this along to any site, blogs, facebook groups or people you think this may apply too.
Thanks

What is bakers chocolate? Is chocolate poisonous to animals?

toxic component of chocolate is theobromine. Humans easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.

Can lead to seizures...

Baking chocolate, also referred to as bitter chocolate, cooking chocolate and unsweetened chocolate, is a type of dark chocolate that is prepared or manufactured for use as an ingredient in baking.

The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is to dogs.

Im all for poking the guy in the ribs multiple times with a .45

When he rides by, shove a stick into the front wheel spokes of the bicycle. That will get his attention to stop.

What next? I am all for the rule of law, but in this case there needs to be a different set of laws, somewhat reminiscent of the Stalin era USSR. I mean my goodness. That guy needs the absolute worst beating imaginable. Rinse and repeat.

My thoughts exactly. Then have him charged for attempted abuse of animals.

There would be issues fir sure if I was able to talk with this guy.
Reporting him to police would not be one of them .

This really makes me mad. Consider going to the mainstream media, as people need to be aware that this monster is out there.

Baker's chocolate contains up to 500 mg of theobromine per ounce. Fatalities in dogs have been documented beginning at 100 mg/lb of body weight. This means that a 30-lb dog could die from ingesting 6 oz of baker's chocolate (and obviously less for smaller dogs, more for larger dogs. Symptoms of toxicity (agitation, vomiting, diarrhea) can begin at much smaller amounts (about 1/8 as much). Milk chocolate is much less toxic.

Good on you for picking up as much as you could find, Ghost. You might have prevented a tragedy (especially for a family's tiny breed pet).

So is xyletol, the artificial sweetener used in things like breath mints.

Ghostguy - thanks for heads up and good on you for picking this up.

Not wanting to take your warning sideways just more of a heads up on stuff to watch out for.

I walk a number of areas and find considerable bad food tossed aside on the public trail systems. We have a natural area with ponds off of 34th street that I walk a lot and some idiot thinks old Subway sandwiches (with meat, tomatoes and dressing) is great food to toss on the edge of ponds for ducks and geese. Just no clue that they do not eat this stuff. All this moron is doing is attracting coyotes, ravens, crows and magpies. All of which steal nesting bird eggs and eat the young. Total dumb ass-hats out there.

I was contacted by two local tv stations, since I took did not take photos and I would not like to appear on TV based on my previous careers they are no longer interested. Im just hoping they might air something as a warning to other users of the park. Hopefully someone else could provide a better description than I was able to.

If one wants to quack, one must hang with the quacks.

You're already 'out' so to speak. Go and interview, the 'bad people' that report will protect your identity.

Otherwise this is just some 'quack' account.

My pets (2 dogs and a cat) take from known hand only, unless a bad guy gets to their food bowl, then I'm in vet bills.

Training is key.

I love dogs and I hate people who do what that dude in the park did to harm dogs. I also wish we had more ability to take people to task for things like this. But, you should be ashamed of yourself for going where you did with that comment.

Ashamed? You wouldn't want to know what I'd do if I caught someone trying to harm my dog. Our dogs are just another member of our family.

No kidding. Just cuz you are a mod doesn't mean you completely give up your right to offer an opinion. The paycheque is just not that big. LOL. In fact, I am still waiting for Cat to give me the Ford pickup, but maybe ABB never gave it to him. Regardless, I don't have it yet! Cat where is the pickup???

So what do you think would be fair punishment for maliciously trying to kill multiple family pets for no reason?
