Default Other tips and tricks

Layin the on the bottom, Pound the bottom as above, use glow jig, use glow stick on your jig or lure at night, ugly smelly old smelts or herring.
Lots of things I have tried and I know many people use. Good tip by FG. Before I used to strip their skin I used to filet and found many jigs in their bellies as well as other lures. Also be careful not to put your fingers in their mouths, especially a big one. they have a clamp and a half of pressure. Even the real heavy jaw openers we use for pike get clamped down by their jaw pressure. We always joke as to what would happen if that was your finger. The small ones like at PC are no problem but the 8-10 lb can be nasty.
Here are a couple winter Crawling Valley and a Pine Coulee Pics.

Enjoy. First 4 are Crawling Valley and last one is last year at Pine Coulee

Wow Gringo, nice catch at CV. I'm going to have to come out with you sometime to CV, I tried there last year quite a few times in different places (mostly around the eastern islands) and never managed to get a big burb, only pike.

Crawling Valley seems to produce some fish!

-Does anyone know why the reservoir was created? (irrigation I'm assuming)
-Was the fishery a natural by product or was it created?
-How can Central Alberta get a Crawling Valley of their own?

Crawling is part of the irrigation reservoir system for southern Alberta agriculture.

Pike and Burbot are naturally in the system, the walleye however, I am not certain - they could've been stocked at one point.

Central Alberta has PLENTY of great lakes that contain just as many Burbot, Pike, Walleye, Lake Whitefish, and a myraid of other species of game fish. Take your time looking though old threads, the information is there! Just like a library, the best info is usually hidden between the lines....

Welcome to the forum Fish Guts. When I was a kid, back in the covered wagon days, I went through a monstrous hailstorm at Sylvan Lake. Hailed so hard it knocked the windows and windshield right out of the car we were hiding in. When it was over, there were hundreds of dead birds and FISH all over the beach, including a burbot that was at least 4 feet long. We had never even heard of them before so it was pretty eerie looking. Also the only lake Ive caught perch when ice fishing, so it should cover both your wants nicely. The perch were in about 60 or so feet of water at the time. Just look for the crowd on the ice.

We will have to make a winter date if we ever get ice. I may have to put the shack on pontoons. I love CV for the size. The Good size burbs there make for a more fun catch than Pine......

They ain't all small at Pine Coulee; I saw a guy put a 9.5 lb burb on the ice there last year. Ya just might have to catch a hundred small ones before ya find the biggun!

Default Bigguns

You are right there are some bigger ones in there as we caught a few. Only thing we caught hundreds to find them. At CV they are generally larger with the odd monster thrown in. I guess it depends on your likes. Either way still makes for a fun day and a great fish and chips later.

I've never heard of any this big in north america, so I'm guessing it must be in europe or asia, but the maximum size recorded is just over 5 feet and nearly 75 lbs. Makes you hope it's possible they grow that big here.
