Default Prussian carp

Anyone caught a Prussian Carp lately? I got one in a beaver trap two seasons ago , In a pond about two hundred meters from the Red Deer river. I was told by F&W they were an invasive species and were now in the Red Deer and surrounding creeks including farm dugouts ? Anyone caught one lately ? I saw another again a couple days ago in a side stream .

They are everywhere...kill them if you catch them, they are built like tanks and they can also live out of water for hours.

Can someone fill me in on what makes these fish so appealing? The ones I've seen (max 6 inches) don't seem like the most exciting species to catch. I suppose it may be fun to have a new species on your list, but I just don't see the appeal.

Not trying to be confrontational, I'm genuinely curious.

if you see one, throw it in the bushes, or take it home

for me its always been i am a big pan fish person, and the appeal of a new species and trying to figure it out is a great challenge for me. when we did find them it was fish every 2nd or 3rd cast and throughout the whole day.

Buddy caught one on the RDR a couple weeks ago.

Rumour is that the Medicine River Wildlife Centre will take them for bird food.

Cheers

As member of the Airdrie Hunting & Fishing Association, I was out at DeWitt's Pond on Saturday checking the garbage cans and picking up trash. While walking around the pond, I talked to about 10 anglers. About half had caught Prussian Carp that day.

One couple caught a couple of small ones while I was talking to them. They were keeping them, so I asked how they cooked them in a palatable way (the 2 they caught were really small). The lady responded that she makes fish soup out of them for her 80 year old mother, who really liked it.

She said the main challenge was that they were full of small bones, but straining for soup overcame that problem. According to her, they are white fleshed and pretty tasty. I have read somewhere that they are pretty tasty deep fried. She thought that if they are big enough, they should be good that way.

So the idea is for a couple of us to test this out. If they are indeed tasty and not too hard to eat, we are going to look at getting some members and their kids out to lay waste to them and get a have a fish fry. If it works, hopefully we can make a little dent in the population and get a decent meal out it at the same time.

Tried a lot, canned corn was the ticket (thanks to the guy who was leaving and gave me a tip). Also had bites corn meal porridge, but was getting suckers one after another, so apparently it makes a difference. Other baits didn't work for me at all yesterday. Good luck.

Not sure how bad for the ecosystem they are going to be, but they are sure fun to catch

Anyone tried fly fishing for them? I tried a few nymphs on rdr but no luck. I was sight fishing a group of a dozen or so and couldn't get any interest.

It was not dewitts. I know, that given invasive nature of the fish, I should have no moral issues leading you to this pond, but I won't do it without an explicit permission from a person who gave location to me, general principals, sorry. And I, actually, do feel sorry.

I was at Dewitt's couple of weeks ago and did see two couples catching 2" prussian carp using dough and very small hooks #16-18? tied like pickerel rig under small slick bober.
One couple had one chabby about 10 " golden in color.
They also had thumb size brown trout in their pail. which is legal...

I just looked at the stocking report, didn't even know they started putting brown trout in Dewitt's. Haven't been there in a couple years myself.

ok so today i decided to go for some more prussian carp and i watched a bunch of youtube videos on do it yourself dough baits. so i mixed up a very small batch and hit the lake for them. big surprised today is that the homemade dough bait worked incredibly well........well at least for the trout. lol oh my god i couldn't keep them off like what the hell??? . back to the drawing board i guess.

I know back home (England) they respond on the fly to imitation floating white bread on the fly

yeah but for fun wise they are incredibly abundant and hit throughout the entire day. all ranged in size from 4" - 6". but don't get me wrong there are some huge ones in there, as i watched a few of the asians pull some out in the 12"+ range but they don't get the constant hits like i did. i wasn't crazy about waiting all day for the odd big fish i'd rather catch lots of small guys in the whole day
