Rcbs vld seater stem?
Does anyone know where to buy a 223 seater die stem for an rcbs die that is a vld stem? I'm loading eldm bullets and would like a stem that fits the bullet profile better. Hoping not to buy a whole new seater die.

Good luck. I had the same issue with my RCBS Gold Medal seating die. It was leaving marks on the Berger 80gr VLD’s. I scoured all the Canadian sources to no avail. I called RCBS and was told that they do not make a VLD seating stem for my model of die.
I ended up buying a new Whidden seating die from Hirsch. It has a VLD stem. When I tried it, it was beautiful…no marks anymore.
Sorry I could not be of any help.

Not exactly your application, but in several instances, I have used a reamer and re-worked a regular one so that it would work with VLD bullets. Was dealing with larger caliber bullets, but maybe worth trying.....?

I have ground a drill bit to reshape the seating plug, and some people have waxed a bullet, and used liquid steel epoxy to reshape a seating plug.

I have reshaped the plug as well BUT I think, I like your liquid steel idea much better. JB weld would get the nod from me. Maybe practice it on a easily replaceable one first?

You could always order an extra plug , or plugs to experiment with. Liquid steel or JB weld would work fine, just use a case with bullet seated, in the press, to keep things true, and wax the bullet good, to keep it from sticking.

I tried this twice with epoxy, didn't work out. Jb weld was also my next thought. I've sanded the hollow out, so will see if that works, if not it's the jb treatment next. Thanks everyone.

Just make sure to scuff the inside of the stem well to give the JB something to stick to.

A grinding tip to roughen it up, or even drill small holes to provide a purchase for the epoxy.

And drill out the very tip section of the seating stem after the epoxy dries as tips on bullets vary among the same lot, and moreso on different lots of the same bullets, especially so on the tips of hollow pointed bullets as they can be highly irregular from bullet to bullet. You want the seating stem to bottom out on curve of the bullet jacket not the tip for consistent seating depth.

I have successfully used Acraglass to fit low drag bullets.

I had a thought last night as I was falling asleep. If your using a hollow tip bullet or one with a nose cavity you might want to fill the hole up and let it harden then shape it, before you run your hollow point bullet into the "mold" and find it stuck because epoxy squished into the cavity and created an permanent bond between the bullet and your plug.

How do you prevent concentricity issues when doing this?

My hornady competition dies set came with the extra stem for the ELDX, Atip or ELDM bullet, am sure they would work with the VLD also

Push the bullet into the neck full length, check to make sure it is concentric and then put it into the press. Put the die into the press after putting the JB into the stem, and the run the ram up and leave it there until set.

If you can seat concentric rounds in its current state then no need to mess around with the seating stem.

I agree, or Hornady as they have the right seater plugs too. I was always a big fan of RCBS but the last decade or more they have not even tried to keep up with where shooting has evolved too. I now buy pretty much Redding or Hornady if I need a new set of dies, just easier than adapting RCBS.
