Default Open Science - Brits have a good idea

Much scientific research is funded fully or partially by taxpayers dollars. The result of that research, once peer reviewed, is then published in a number of different scientific journals.

The problem is, that often those studies then reside behind a pay-wall. The public gets to see the abstracts, but unless one has a subscription, is often restricted from seeing the study in its entirety.

As this article indicates, that will be changing in Britain. If a study is publicly funded by taxpayers, it will be accessible to taxpayers as opposed to the current situation.

Isn't it about time we lobby that the same becomes the case in Canada? I see no downsides, except to those journals that do the publishing.

Thoughts?

I look forward to the new, free, open source journals which are gaining ground.
