Default Needles

Broke a needle sewing the legs closed on a beaver hide. Dug out the new needle I just received from Halford’s and found that they would not pierce into the hide, and when I used a pair of pliers to force it through I had to use the pliers to pull the needle through the fleshy side of the hide. Took me 30 minutes to stitch 3 legs closed. They are 15ga needles and was like trying to push a nail through the hide. Anyone else having this problem or have any ideas about using these needles. Any one find a supplier of needles that work on beaver hides. Any ideas on making the needle slide through the hide.
