Never fished alligator gar, but when I was a lad I read an article in Outdoor life I believe about some guys in Florida who were after AG.
They were in the swamps and the fish were huge, strapped to the side of their tinner. 8 feet + long. They also used a gun to shoot the fish when they got them alongside. Exciting stuff. i always thought 'someday', but never did get to Florida.

Never targeted, but caught some fishing for catfish at night in TX. I stopped using chicken liver for when they would get really active, I think it worked like a gar magnet.

I fish every spring for spotted gar down south of Houston, looking at pulling a guided trip on the Brazos or the Trinity next spring for gator gar

I did see/hook one gator gar while fishing Brazos Bend. Was using a rubber shad around some pads for bass, when about a 4foot gar came out of the weeds and inhaled the bait. I was not expecting this and almost soiled myself, needless to say I panicked and set the hook immediately and the fish was off after a short run. With all gar, hook sets are the toughest part.

Not much help but good luck and share the details when you are back

For a guide/outfitter, I'm leaning towards Bubba Bedre. Bubba hosted Jeremy Wade of River Monsters. Depends on the details, I'm thinking of booking next spring or summer. At this point, I sent Bubba an e-mail and am waiting for his response.

Not sure if we fished the same places in TX but those fish are scary while fishing at night haha. Nothing like a shark stealing your catch from your wading belt, but still scary.

I e-mailed Bubba over a week ago. Still haven't received a response.

For catfish usually fished north of Houston - snakes, turtles, small gars were common, but nothing scary. Then after fishing it for few years on occasion I learned that the lake is not far north enough for alligators .
But it was nice place to fish at night till I learned it
