Default Allocation of fish stocks

Guys/Gals,

The Fish Strategy for Alberta see: http://srd.alberta.ca/FishWildlife/F...nStrategy.aspx references a document Fish and Wildlife Policy for Alberta [1982] which lays out the allocation for fish in Alberta.

And this is it:

1. Conservation of fish stocks;
2. Alberta Indians fishing for food on specific sites;
3. Métis people fishing on Métis Settlements;
4. Resident recreational use; and
5. Primary commercial uses (e.g., commercial fishing, guiding and tourist angling).

You will notice that Resident Recreational use is #4 of 5. What the document doesn't say is critical. It doesn't account for all other losses of fish - poaching, predation, land use changes eg pipelines crossings/forestry, stupid quadders, river wipe outs like in the tar sands etc. All other users/impacts come before us lowly suckers down there @ #4.
What is curious though - SRD is responsible for or enforces regulations for poaching, predation, land use changes [pipelines crossings/forestry stupid quadders et al], river wipe out like in the tar sands etc.

So if SRD doesn't do their job - guess who gets it in the ear.

Good old #4.

Now doesn't that make your day or wish that there were more SRD people.

Considering #3 is limited to Metis Settlements, Recreational Angling is also #3 behind Indidan Food fishing.

This has angered me for a while....

Recreational fishing supposedly takes priority ahead of Commercial Fishing, yet commercial fisheries can waste unlimited numbers of burbot while recreational anglers are being restricted with further limit reductions for this species.

I suggest it is time for the Wasting of burbot exemption to be eliminated.
