Default How does this still happen?

Another case of "ID your target before you fire"

A beloved Long Island Firefighter was killed in an upstate hunting accident after a fellow Firefighter mistook him for a deer, sources told the media on Monday.
Charles Bruce, 52, was on an annual hunting trip with friends from the Malverne (Nassau County) Fire Department when the tragedy unfolded about 10:20 a.m. Saturday in rural Westford, about 11 miles east of Cooperstown.
"Unfortunately, it was a high-powered rifle. He was dead before he hit the ground," Otsego County District Attorney John Muehl told The News.
"Charlie had a bad back, so he went back to his room to rest. And when he came back out, one guy saw a tree move and fired," said a close friend of the victim's who asked to remain anonymous.
The shooter was a Malverne Firefighter who is understandably "destroyed" over the incident, the friend said.

It blows my mind to think hunters still do stupid ***** like this....

This stuff needs to stop. No trophy or amount of meat is worth shooting someone over. Please people stop shooting at noises and shapes. If you are not 100% sure of your target and beyond don't shoot.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Beyond logic...........That is why I only go with a very select few guys I trust. I know there are others out there, but can't control that.

If your shooting at a human then you clearly didn't identify your target. Was it a deer? A moose? An elk? What species? Can you actually shoot that specific animal in this or that zone? Is your hip shot going to dispatch the animal in the vitals?

So many variables that these trigger happy people done think about.

750,000 hunters in 140,000 sq km (AB is 105,000 hunters in 650,000 sq km)
"Any" sex deer tags (only a vague ID required)
The only big game is deer and bear (see ID above)

That's how it happens.

Sincerest condolences to the family.

Is the area that this tragedy happened in one of those which requires hunter/blaze orange?
I think it is, but can't confirm it.

Sad news

Amazing. Shooter might be heartbroken but should be put away for a good long time. Even more stunning given the fact the shooter had to know there were others hunting in the area... I mean, he was with them.

Not to derail but I'm not sure blaze orange even helps. I heard of a hunter and guide being shot off of a quad by the hunters own brother. Apparently the hunter mistook TWO people on a QUAD for a bear. If riding a quad doesn't distinguish two people as NOT being a bear than an orange vest doesn't seem like it would help either.

You can't fix stupid. If you aren't 100% sure of the target, don't shoot.

I suspect too much of his hunting 'training' on Buck Hunter in a pub on a subject without enough sense to buy a single Mojo candy. Shooting a firearm is only to be done on a target you've already identified either with your Mark I eyeballs or through binoculars or a spotting scope. The firearm isn't raised until this has already happened. An entirely preventable tragedy. RIP to the fallen.

I took the liberty of giving that a tweak for ya.

Good tweak, as it covers the idiots that use their riflescope in place of binoculars.

Sad news indeed.

The vague ID doesn't really cut it either. When you raise your rifle do you not have to place the crosshairs on the vitals which would require you to recognize the shape of the animal?
