Default Back From The Salt Chuck

Well we got back from vacation a couple days ago and had a great time.. Spent 9 days out on the salt chuck and it was great.. Fishing was pretty good we were able to put quite a few fish in the freezer for winter...

We caught a few Chinnook but it was not easy we had to work for them but the Pink fishing was unbelevible to the point that they were a nuisance.. I would go through 4 to 5 trays of bait by noon every day.. Actually that is when we would come off the water every day.. We also were able to bring home 4 nice hatchery Coho as well always a bonus...

And after 30 years hunting for my Tyee I finally got em not once but twice in one week... landed a 32# and a 31.5# 2 days later what a rush... When I was battling the second one we had 2 whales surfacing with in 30 feet of the boat,,, what an experience that was.... My son was able to land a 26# as well he had quite the battle.. In all we landed a 32, 31.5, 26, 3 in the 20# range a couple 15 as well and an endless amount of Pinks.. so it was a good trip here are couple pics..

31.5 pound Chinnook

32 and a 26 pounder

Another of the 32 pounder

Great looking fish Walleyes...I heard it was a banner year out there....glad you got to experience it. Nice you could get your boy out there as well. Bet it was the thrill of a lifetime for him.

It's interesting how the word tyee has come to represent any chinook over 30 pounds but in truth, the Tyee Club of British Columbia still exists and they have some very stringent regulations for qualifying fish. The bigged one being that the boat used to catch the fish must be rowed or paddled. This club dates back to the late 1800s and still carries on their proud tradition today.

Here's the condensed version of their rules:

Tyee Club of British Columbia
Rules and Regulations - Condensed Version
The following rules are an extract of the regulations and are to be used for quick reference only. For the regulations in their entirety, please check the Official Regulations page.

Tackle Requirements

Rules

Tackle
The word tackle shall be defined as consisting of rod, reel, line, leader, and lure.

Rod
The rod must be between 6 and 9 feet long. It may be made of wood, glass, cane, synthetic or tubular metal.

Reel
The reel must be hand operated. Electric or spring-wound automatic reels are excluded. No slipping or clutch mechanisms are allowed in single action reels. It is suggested that the reel has a minimum capacity of 250 yards of line.

Line and Line Testing
The line must have a breaking strength of 20 lb. or less. Line testing shall be performed by the Weigh-master using the Official testing weight of the Tyee Club.

Leader
The use of a leader is optional. If used, it must be less than 6 feet in length.

Lure
The lure may be any type of artificial lure that has one single barb-less hook only, and its basic use is for trolling. Lures designed for jigging, spinning, still fishing, attraction by electronic or other means shall be excluded.

Use of depth sounders or any electronic devices for fish detection are not allowed.

Rules
Anyone may compete in the Annual Tournament. Along with Life and Active club members, other anglers may compete by registering or filing an "intent to register" with the weigh master or a club director prior to angling. A fee is charged to compete. Anglers under the age of sixteen do not have to pay the registration fee.

Annual fee for active members: $20.00

Annual non-member registration fee: $10.00
Note: Upon registering a Tyee, you will be required to pay an additional $10.00 fee as an active member.

Life Time Memberships: $500.00

Any applicant for membership must qualify by taking a Tyee salmon of at least 30 pounds, on approved tackle, from an approved boat.

Qualifying fish must be taken from the waters of Discovery Passage during the open season for the club. The boundaries and the open dates should be confirmed at the Club House.

All fish taken under the Tyee Club rules must be caught on a single hook and artificial lure. The use of natural baits is not permitted.

All qualifying fish must be taken from a boat that is rowed or paddled. Trolling must not be done with a motor of any kind.

Outboard motors may be used for transportation only and should be tilted up while fishing to avoid any entanglement while fishing.

People fishing under Tyee Club regulations are required to adhere to all Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations including, but not limited to, catch limits.

In the case of a tie in weights, the first fish landed shall be considered the winner.

The angler must bring their fish to the net or gaff by use of a rod or reel only. The guide or another angler in the boat may assist, but only if the angler's line tangles with another, catches on the propeller or is fouled by other objects. The angler may also get assistance to release the weight, if required.

Registration of qualifying fish and line testing may only be done by the official weigh master of the Club, by members of the tackle committee, or by someone duly appointed by the Board of Directors.

Yup,, you are rite about the "Tyee Club" sheep,,and to be an actual member of said club you must meet all the said requirements.. But a "Tyee" is still any Chinook over 30#... And a "King" is any Chinook over 50#,,,, still might be a while till I get that bugger but it will come...

Hmmm...never heard the term king used for a chinook over 50 pounds. South of the border....well north too, in Alaska, they call all mature chinooks kings. A 50 pounder would be a dream come true for sure but they are definitely out there. Think I'd just call it freaking huge...lol

There was a 51.5# caught in our area while we were there,, by a 12 year old local boy lucky bugger...

Congrats on the slabs. It has been a tough year to get into the big fish around the island. I only was able to get home for one trip and have never worked so hard to get our limit. I have heard that even the Big bank in Bamfield has been slow.

P.s If you were fishing out of Sooke did you make the run to Swiftsure bank??? If not look it up on your charts. It is a bit of a run but produces good fish.
