Giant Bluefin Tuna Oct.6th
Flew Home to PEI to Visit Family and Of Course do a Little Fishing October 5th, a Good Friend of my Father had been saving his second Tuna Tag for me, and he was ready to go before i had my bags unpacked..lol. headed out @ 5:00am first morning home. Dave had filled his first Tag already and new where the fish were. 3 of my Fathers Friends who are very experienced Tuna Fishermen and myself sailed out about 25km to the "Ridge" a lot of Herring Boats were pulling nets and the Place was Alive with Tuna & Pilot Whales. First mark we throw a dead herring on a Circle Hook over and instantly the Rod Bends in Half! looked like a Big Fish probably a Grander( no way of telling-but was a big mark on the Sonar and he took 700yards of Dacron on his first run..lol. Alot of fish being caught were in the 1000-1100lb range-but not getting a good price) he ends up dragging us into the herring nets and went under a few to break us off after 30-40min.
grab another Rod, mark another Fish, Bait it throw it over, im setting the Drag to Strike when the Rod Bends, again the fish goes to the nets, we get through them and start slowly trying to work him to some open deep water, i stay on the Rod for about 40min, by this time my arms are pumped up like popeye... big runs, then right back at the boat-come to surface go to bottom-crazy head shakes- ive fought Tuna before but this was a Screamer! since this was for keeps i hand the rod off for a break-landing one is a definate team effort and its in your best interest to keep a fresh arm on the Reel.. me and one other guy go back and forth for 1.75hrs before we rip a Harpoon into him. we sail him in and get a couple quick pics.. they dont give you much time before chopping them up and putting them on ice..lol. the buyer checks the Core and Tail sample and its a High Fat, High Quality Fish! 640lbs! ended up dressing @ 428lbs @ 14.00 a lb. Great Day that i will remeber forever!! Got into a Few Sea Run Rainbows and some Mackeral on the Rivers as Well! Great Trip!

I have some extended family in PEI, some day I am going to have to head out there and see them and try to catch one of these beasts.

Would love to fight one on Stand up!..Most commercial guys don't want to use stand up gear because it can take longer to land them, and will heat them up, burning the meat.. I think i am going to order one and some other gear as a appreciation present for Dave though!
I have fished out of Souris before, drifting off Basin Head Beach! Caught my first Tuna there! Were you out on a C&R Charter?

That is really cool. I've been watching Wicked Tuna on tv and ever since I've wanted to do that. Congrats on a great fish & thanks for sharing your story & pics.
