3 years old is borderline imo, just old enough she can probably do some of the work but young enough she probably doesn't do very much and probably loses interest quick. Lots of guys drag their toddlers around just to get more lines in the water and I don't agree with that but if the kid is actually doing at least the reeling then I don't have a problem with it.

I get what your saying but I have been taking my son out since he was 3 and that's the one thing he always wanted was to pick his lines and out fish dad. Mind you I eat 1 or 2 fish a year and the rest go back. Some people use toddlers and keep everything.

Yeah 3 is borderline, some kids that age will get right involved some of them still aren't interested. What is sickening is when see a guy out with a toddler that can't walk and he is using double lines and taking double limit...

Agree with what you guys are saying, but its the abuse with fish limits I have a problem with as well.
I still think that with as inexpensive as licenses are in AB, for kids to have a limit they should need their own license.
Down south it is quite a common abuse/problem.

I think minors should share the limit with the guardian that is coaching them while fishing.....just my opinion.
I have personally seen a Dad fishing 4 rods at a trout pond while Mom and the kids play at the park 80-100 yards away and could care less about fishing...that's the type of abuse I dislike.

Not in Alberta....everyone has their own limit regardless of age or whether you purchased a license or not....it is illegal to "share" a limit (the fish you personally catch are the only ones that can count towards YOUR limit).

Awsome
That is awesome! good on the judge. Some of my best memories of being that age is my dad tying hooks for me and putting on worms for me and occasionally helping me real one in as sometimes pike are just to big for a 3 year old. Never to young to Start Fishing

Judge sinks fishing charge

BY HANNAH SPRAY, THE STARPHOENIX OCTOBER 28, 2014
It’s not illegal to take your kid fishing, a Saskatchewan judge said in finding a man not guilty of having too many lines in the water at once.
A conservation officer who encountered Jake Pick ice fishing on March 29 with his three-year-old daughter on Turtle Lake saw things differently.
She charged Pick with having more than two lines in ice-covered water, contrary to the Fisheries Act, because both Pick and his daughter had two lines in the water.
The officer laid the charge because she believed the young girl wasn’t “able to set, maintain, watch and retrieve fish on her own lines,” as summarized by Judge Dan O’Hanlon in a written ruling delivered in Spiritwood provincial court earlier this month.
O’Hanlon noted nothing in the province’s regulations says minors must have “a certain level of skill or ability” to fish.
In every province, children under 16 years of age don’t require a licence to fish, O’Hanlon said, and no province has a minimum age for fishing.
Most provinces have rules requiring the minor’s catch to be included in the quota of the licensed supervising adult, but Saskatchewan doesn’t, O’Hanlon said.
Pick, who represented himself at trial, submitted one item as an exhibit, the 2014 Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide.
“It is notable that the cover picture chosen for this publication is of what appears to be a father baiting or tying a hook on the fishing rod and line held by his young daughter,” O’Hanlon said.
The guide also features a message from then-Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff, encouraging people to fish with their friends and family.
O’Hanlon concluded there’s no minimum age for fishing and there’s no specific skill level required to fish.
“Consequently, just because an individual is three years of age, and does not have the ability to do everything required when fishing, it does not mean that he or she cannot legally fish,” O’Hanlon said.
“I find the accused not guilty of the charge.”

I agree with those who feel minor's catch should be part of the adult's limit

You have to side with the fisherman and judge. The fishing police dude is probably the next serial killer with wanna be cop syndrome. If you don't allow the 3 year old to fish based on "skills", where does it end? Who is going to be the judge of those skills? How about an Autistic person who is 14 and finds amazing therapeutic results when fishing but doesn't have the "skills"?!!! Is he/she not going to be considered a person? They say that our children form a large portion of their personality in the first 3 to 4 years.....is some jerkwad who wants to write a ticket going to tell me I can't form my kids values of life and nature? How is my 3 year old going to learn...?....What could be better than to be able to celebrate a "success" that my child has by catching his own fish!!! You can't replace those moments. How about after my 3 year old catches a fish, I teach him/her that we have enough food and it will be best to release this one. What an amazing lesson! Jerk people in "authority" all over the place!
