Google Chuckhawks Remington 788 review for some good info.
https://www.chuckhawks.com/rem_788.html
I hated the 10 lb trigger on my lefty 6 mm until I figured out it could be modified to have adjustments just like a 700 trigger.
Some magazines are hard to find but aftermarket stuff is available.
All seem to be good shooters.

Long ago I had a 788 in 30-30 and other calibres too. Bolt is sloppy and not smooth, mag is not easy to insert, trigger hard. I had bought the 30-30 thinking that it would be accurate in the 788 with a scope, but it wasn't. I will take an older Marlin any day over that 788.

Oh one more thing, the ejection port is too small and you have to work the action to make sure the empty clears, also difficult for single loading from the top. If you are just shooting gophers with a 788 it is fine, if you end up in a tense fast fire situation you quickly find out why you'll never buy another one.

My father used a 788 for several years as his primary deer rifle, but it was in 243win. It was quite accurate, and gave him no issues..

i have a 243 carbine that has put down probably 30+ deer in its time.
Rebarrelling it now with a brand new take off 308 varmint barrel of a 700.
Will be interesting

I have a take off 308 win 788 barrel. PM for details if your interested, its in good shape, cheap and easier to install than a 700 barrel. In calgary.
What are you doing with the old 243 barrel? is it shot out?

Pardon the late reply, been out and will be out on the road for a while.
my current barrel ( 18 1/2 inch carbine model) is not shot out, but has seen probably 1000+ rounds.
I havent yet had the barrel swap done as i am rethinking this project.
