I've never had a great fight from Walleye, and I've caught hundreds and hundreds of them. If you're on a good lake, in June, and northern Alberta, you can easily catch 100+ a day.
I will say, they are a blast to catch for a few reasons. You can catch a pile of them in a day, they are incredibly easy to land(soft grip on the belly and they rarely shake in your hand), they don't drip slime like northerns, they are easy to take off the hook(normally hooked nicely through the lip, not half way down the throat like northerns), they are very easy to fillet and less boney than most fish, and they are incredibly good eating.
Not bashing northerns, because those are a blast too, but that's my opinion on the draw of walleye fishing.

Well HeavyK.... I've always wondered the same thing!
In my opinion, the Walleye fanatics out there have been brainwashed by hype and marketing just like the Bass nuts.
I've gone East and fished with friends that swear by Bass and Walleye. Could never figure it out.
I like ALL FISHING however I do not agree with messing with our waters' natural balances of native fishes to accommodate the whims and wants of some.
Lakes like Pigeon Lake, which I've been around for 40 years, have been messed with and destroyed because of these people. If there are fish species you want... go to where they exist naturally and stop effing around with Pike, Perch, Burbot and Whietfish.
JUST SAYIN'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone who is saying that walleyes are a lazy fight should try using some lighter gear more suited towards the size of fish being caught.
Instead of buying into the trend of using 30-50 lbs test line and heavy action rods for a 5lbs fish try using 5-6lbs test with light to medium light rods. Instead of winching them off of the bottom of the lake/river you can set your drag properly and have a decent battle on your hands.

That's a good idea.
I see a lot of people at PCR getting a solid fight out of the walleye on Barbie and Shrek rods

Nate lets be realistic though, the sport of walleye fishing has much more to do with the hype of tournament fishing, the quality of the meat, the widespread distribution, and variety of options that can be used to target them. Pound for pound, they are a horrible fighting fish no matter what you use to reel them in.

Oh ya I am not saying they are the greatest fighting fish out there but if you want some more fight out of them then you should be using the proper weight of gear.
Like I said before I love the challenge of putting a plan together on a lake to go after the bigger fish and the competition of a tournament.
I go after trout all the time with my fly gear and love the battles I get from them to. But I get enjoyment out of these 2 styles of fishing and species of fish for completely different reasons.

I'm just bustin your chops
I get a good fight out of the pcr wallies on my light gear. they are scrappers for their size
I find bulls, lakers, and browns to be pretty poor fighters as well, but once in a while you get one that just goes for it.
like anything, sometimes a certain lake just has screamers

while I can't comment on Browns, I can say if you've ever caught a bull or laker bigger than 3 pounds you will be eating your words. Especially on lakers, nothing like having the fish to the surface then next thing you know it's back on the bottom in 100+ feet of water.

I am not to sure what he uses for line. I know it is quite a bit heavier then I use though. I run 5lbs power pro on my jigging rods and 10 lbs power pro on my bottom bouncing rods. All my other rods have less then 10lbs braid on them.

Caught many of both over 3lbs. Never had a laker under dbl digits man handle me like that though.
We had a couple this spring put up a good tussle though. 1 earned its freedom.
Laker over a walleye in a scrap anyday.
What do you think AznRice Dude?

Not in reference to any particular lake x with crazy fighting fish. I just mean that some fish populations have a little more **** and vinegar than others.
That double handed hookset will get them everytime. Hhaha I told you to bring medium heavy gear.....
BANG!
