I see cabelas Boxing Day sale has there strikemaster on sale with a spare battery. I bought mine 5 years ago and it’s still going strong. Merry Christmas.

Good buy, thinking of grabbing 1 of the strike masters. Just wondering how long before strikemaster goes to the plastic flite like the Ion. Would like the Ion for ease of use/transportation but $1000?!

The Jiffy electric seriously underperforms both the Ion G2 and the StrikeMaster 40v.

Yeah you can. It's called an Ion G2 and it weighs about half as much.

But they are both great augers. And weight aside, it's splitting hairs between them.

But that weight difference...

It's funny the last two years the StrikeMaster 40 was all these guys were using Clayton Schick jay Siemens Aaron wiebe we're all pumping out the StrikeMaster now this year they're all using the Ion 2 but I guarantee you they're not paying for them either.

The difference in performance between an Ion G2 and a StrikeMaster 40v is negligible (although the Ion is very slightly faster and doesn't hitch at the bottom of the hole like the SM is prone to). The difference in weight though is HUUUUGE. If you truly have 50+ hole days fishing and you try a G2, they'll have to pry it out of your cold, dead hands to get it back.

I'm starting to find it unusual to hear someone fire up a gas powered auger nowadays. Yesterday, we were the first out on the ice at 7am. By the time the sun came up, there were two other hubs out on the ice fishing. Never even heard them setting up. In fact, I'm not sure I even heard a gas auger yesterday and I'm only hearing one or two a day this season so far. Other than the shanty towns fishing for whites of course.

Another reason I like my strikemaster is that I also have a gas strikemaster too. It starts so easy even in the coldest weather and light and since the auger is the same on both units so same blades and same extension shaft

that boxing day sale is a great deal...buy the strikemaster...I just got off the ice and drilled a lot of holes, still got almost a full charge left...15" of ice is a breeze.

Love my Strikemaster 40v lithium. If your getting 2 batteries and auger at the sale price that’s pretty decent.

I know both jay and clay from guiding with them. I believe both have even said in their videos that they were given the Ion G2's to try this year and see how they like them/perform. Honestly dont think you can go wrong with either.

Ya it really boils down to the weight from what I’ve read. As far as reliability I haven’t heard complaints from either. If Ion would offer a free battery promotion I’d be sold, if not I’ll be going strikemaster for more bang for my buck.

I bought an Ion pretty much when they first came out. I still have the receipt from Canadian Tire in Red Deer for $340.00. Still on the same battery and same set of blades. Usually things go down in price when they ramp up production but it looks like these augers have over doubled in price....a bit weird. Sure do like the Ion but have never seen a Strikemaster yet.

When it comes to weight, I just think about using an Eskimo z71. After using one of those beasts any electric is real light. Lol

That’s what I had before the SM40. That Eskimo was a work out when the ice started building up. The 40v weight is not even worth talking about. It’s super light and to the guy who says it’s jamming up.Might want to take it back. I have never seen or heard of that before. Don’t lean on the machine and let the auger do the work.

They are a beast for sure and will wear you out if you need to drill a pile of holes. And getting back to the electrics that style of blades the eskimo gas augers use isn't far off from the ion and might even be identical. I've said it before and stick by it, the strikemaster whether gas or electric has the most efficient cutting blades around aside from maybe a nils which isn't readily available around here. In my eyes all they did with the ion is add a higher capacity battery and jack up the price. I'm curious to see how the ten inch ion g2's perform once the ice starts thickening up.

It works great. My son showed me a video at supper tonight he did with his drone last year where I drilled a dozen holes in a row with my 8" G2 buried into the shavings each time. I did that hundreds of times last season. Not a hiccup. I haven't touched my 8" G2 yet this year because the 10" has worked just as well. I'm not sure what you think will change as the ice gets thicker. 1200" of ice per charge is 1200" of ice, regardless of how thick the ice is.

From what I've seen with the first generation ions I simply don't agree and if the g2's are that much better all the power to you but I'm skeptical. The load on the the auger compounds as the ice thickens. It's not a simple matter of inches of ice. The deeper the ice gets you have more resistance to the flighting, you are lifting more shavings, and by design the ion is drawing more amps to cut. Like I said it is a less efficient cutting set up. If the strikemaster were to put a 6 ah battery on it will cut more ice on a charge.

Let's not forget that eskimo is asking quite the premium for what amounts to a slightly better battery... Not exactly hard to compute which one is the better buy.
