Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition
So, just got the news that the 2017 Expo is cancelled. But will be back in 2018.
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are....

I've only been to one several years ago, and I haven't been back since, so I personally won't miss it all that much. I do usually think about going to most years, especially when cabin fever is starting to set in.

In January of 2001 Calgarians were introduced to the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition. Over the last 14 years it has grown to represent all of western Canada and throughout that time so many great friendships have been formed. The show floor is always packed full of folks who have become part of our extended family. The exposition has become the annual "watering hole" for the western Canadian fly-fishing community, is well respected by industry and is a must attend event on the consumer show circuit.
For the Bird family, this event has afforded the opportunity to remain close, which for us, is so much more valuable than any financial measurement. So many good things have come from the exposition, including Fly Fusion Magazine, the International Fly Fishing Film Festival, Fly Fusion Television and a new project in development. We can’t begin to express just how grateful we are to you, the exhibitors, for your loyal dedication.
For the 2017 trade show season we have decided to not produce the exposition. Instead, we will produce a new awards event in Calgary designed to reward those individuals and companies who are vested in the pursuit of well-done fly-fishing media. We are also going to take the opportunity to join the show circuit (The Fly Fishing Shows) and visit a number of different cities throughout North America with the magazine - that is long overdue!
We believe wholeheartedly in the value of connecting with the fly-fishing community face-to-face. We are not closing the doors on the exposition and hold the ongoing option, desire and capacity to produce the Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition at any time in partnership with the will and needs of the fly-fishing community.
On behalf of the Bird family - thank you! "

Only sad part is that I taught over 300 kids and adults how to tie a fly every year. Was also a nice place to catch up with guys I haven't seen in a while.

I always enjoyed the show, took in a couple seminars. What the %$## else is going on in February?
It was particularly good if you were in the market for a rod. You could select one from almost any store or manufacturer and then go try it out in the pool for a while.

I probably would have still not tried tying to this day were it not for the efforts of you and Murray a couple of Expos ago. Not that I'm anything more than a tying novice, but I really enjoy the bit I get to do. Maybe you guys should see if you could come to the Lethbridge conclave and set up shop there!

It's been the first weekend in March the last couple of years. Haven't heard a firm date yet, but will ask. They held it at CASA last year... used to be at the Barn at the College, but unfortunately that venue changed into classrooms.
They have done a film on the Friday night (eg, IF4), and then the conclave and a banquet on Saturday. Think "small but mighty"... if you expect it to be like the Calgary one you will likely be disappointed. Jeff Currier was the keynote speaker last year, and he was excellent.

Was a nice show to see some of the new or different stuff that the local stores were not showing, the odd good deal if you happened to be needing it. Yea, a lot of the same old, same old, but, also some things you wouldn't otherwise see around, if it wasn't for the show. Good place to BS and learn a bit about one thing or another.

See my post above, there won't be an Expo for 2018. But they're hoping to have something perhaps in the works for 2019. There are several web sites that farm other old sites for content and present it as its own. The official Expo web site has been removed.

Next weekend??? These guys don't believe in advertising or publicity, do that? LOL Yeah, I'll probably go anyway.
EDIT. Oh I guess I won't be going afterall. They can't get their shoot together for two years to lease out a bunch of tables? Sheesh. Losing interest fast.

If I am wrong, I apologize. I was trying to google the dates, as last year Bird Marketing had said 2017 was cancelled, but 2018 was good to go.

If this website is in fact untrue, it's definitely a cruel joke.

Western Canadian Fly Fishing Exposition
I am assuming, based on the absolute lack of advertisement directly from the organization that puts the expo on, that it's not happening again this year.
