Rick, I know a guy with a 7MM Mashburn reamer. It has all of the above AND a cool looking belt.

The 7x64 Brenneke (1916?) and the .284 Winchester were by far the two biggest advancements of the 7mm ilk, and really shadow the others.

The .284 is arguably one of the top three most accurate cartridges in the game and gives you all the horse power needed in NA (we can argue over the big bears but Phil Shoemaker says that 175grs at 2550fps is a great place to be). Refrain from making silly comments about it being hindered by the 2.800" mags and other garbage like not feeding. I have enough experience to know that 1/2 MOA accuracy is more than capable with 140gr TTSX's going 3000fps loaded at 2.780". That later was achieved in a rifle that weighed less than 6 1/4lbs scoped and fed just fine. In fact, of the 3 .284's I have owned 2 are the #1 and #2 contenders for most accurate hunting rifles I have owned.

The 7x64 Brennke was the equivalent of the Ross and came before it. This Euro-Icon was the 30-06 necked down and could push 175gr softs 2650fps in a day when the 30-06 was struggling to do that (European powders of the time were far more advanced). The 139gr rounds of the time (I believe 20's era) have been fired in modern rifles over chronographs achieving 3000fps. The .280 Remington is reduced to a wannabe come lately and looks something like a Chevy Mustang.
Today when loaded properly to the same SAAMI pressure as the .270 160gr bullets will reach 2850fps with plain old H4831. And 140's over 3000fps as well. Haven't improved much in nearly 100 years. Heck, most 7mm Remington Magnum factory ammo does this over a chrony today.

Now now. Finn Aagard loved the 7X64 and used it extensively. However once in Texas he had it rechambered to the 280 Remington.

Ouch. I have a 7-30 and really like making brass and loading it. My boys shoot it and it will probably claim their first deer. I really like the 7Wby too as we have used it for years with great success.

I have had at least 4 (all I can think of right now) and currently own one. Great round that should never have been orphaned...

My BDL 7mag after 30 years still hits the spot.
Even after I drove over it (with the bolt open) and cracked the stock.
I used carpenters glue and a couple of clamps.
The rifle now has a slight left curve which places it right into my shoulder.

The Leupold 3.5-10 vxIII that was on it at the time, still shot well throughout the zoom but had freeplay at each end and I suspected a lost seal.
It went to Okotoks and was replaced by a brand new one.
Free of charge, no questions asked, no shipping. Leupold is #1.

True story.

I thought there would be more love for the 7wsm. I had a PGW Coyote built with this chambering and only have great things to say about it. Last year a good friend of mine bought a Browning M1000 Eclipse chambered in a 7WSM as well and I was pretty suprised how accurate it was out to 800m, we haven't taken it further yet but it looks great so far.

Have 7 RUM Rem 700, 7 Rem mag Rem 700 BDL, 7x75R in a Drilling and 7mm-08. Each for their intended use are great rounds.

The 7 Rem mag I have had and used since I was 18, so it has killed a pile of game. The others have all taken their share and work excellent too. Shot placement is key.The 7 Rem Mag to me is softer shooting than a 30-06 or 270 in exactly the same rifle and is one of the reasons I bought it. Better ballistics, excellent accuracy (when I bought this gun sub MOA factory rifles were VERY rare) and a very good looking gun that came in Left Hand.

As to recoil, the RUM really has a lot of it. Great long range rifle but needs either mercury suppressor and Pachmeyer pad or a muzzle break. I found the recoil prior to adding the suppressor and pad to be the most unpleasant recoil of any gun I ever shot. Worse than my 460 mag with full bore loads. After the suppressor and PAD, quite pleasant to shoot. For heavy bullets at long range it is hard to beat.

For those that are real recoil sensitive, the 7x57 and 7mm-08 are great choices that still do a very effective job on game.

I have had two of these over the years. Both CZ's. They had a lot of freebore and you could crank them up pretty good. I seem to remember the 145gr. Speer bullets at 3100 fps. Both rifles were extremely accurate. Had those weird Zeiss scopes on them.

Alas when the choice was between that and the Pre 64 model 70 there was little doubt which way to go.

7 x 57 or 7 x 57 AI or 280. More than enough for what I need and what I hunt. All three are a pleasure to shoot.

7mm WSM for me!
It's an oddball but it sure does perform. Got one in a stainless model 70 and its a killer. Mighty accurate too

Yes they are. In fact my 7 x 57 AI is probably my favorite rifle. Might be beause it was my first "serious" hunting rifle, or that a friend had it built, or that it shoots so.....well, or just a combination of everything.

I'd probably buy the rifle before the cartridge especially in 7mm caliber. I'd choose a rifle for the specific stlye of hunting first then pick a capable cartridge. My present interest would fall towards wsm or rsam in 7mm if i could find it or build it in the rifle that suits the situation.
