Your question begs for even more questions. What are you defending your home from? Are you patrolling the perimeter, or strictly indoors? Outdoors, I'm gonna go with slugs. Indoors, yer gonna lay a whole lotta smack down with even the smallest 12 ga. shot, assuming close range!

Either way, aren't zombies immortal?

We see a lot of bear defense threads, and plenty of sound suggestions for how to neutralize them. I've not previously been attacked by a home, but they're typically very slow moving and usually quite suceptible to fire and chainsaws. Another option is to rent the home to a fraternity, that'll learn it!

Something will low velocity. Trap shot even, guy comes in your room and you happen to have it loaded and blast him, trust me, you may not kill him, but he is giing down. Its crucial not to use big game loads, stray pellets will go through your walls and put others in harms way. Look at the American defense shotgun Ammo, real ruthless but in the 1200 and lower FPS range.

If you patroling your land for people and things did not go bad, you had best not tell the police that.

Its called freedom, no harm asking.

Answer; if you can not hit the broad side of a barn you will never hit a home BUT a good load would be #4 shot to start with...

Good points

They're even slower than zombies, so to prevent any possible collateral damage or injury, I'd leave the shotgun in the truck and go at 'er with a chainsaw. A few large cuts, just above the foundation, should do it.

Remember ... 'The only good home, is a dead home!'

Its not freedom actually, you can't buy a weapon with the intent to use it on a person if a situation arises.

And what will you tell the police in your frantic andrenaline driven statement? I had a shotgun loaded beside my bed in case someone broke in? You will go to jail, did you call the police as soon as someone entered your home? I hope so, cause if not you will go to jail. Did you leave your room and persue those invading your home? If so, you most likely will go to jail.

Safet bet will be to have your Wife call the police, then you walk outside your door and yell "I have a firearm, and if you do not leave the house I will use it". 9.9/10 times the people will run away and you will be saved the fiasco of Legal bills and the mental anguish of taking a life.

I know most of you big scary gun tooting cop callers say you would fire without a second thought, but if shooting people takes a toll on a cop, someone trained to do it. Then I imagine it will take a toll on you to.

I think it's a honest question.

No premeditation despite what our friend Bee thinks.

Protecting your family is one of the basics. If you find yourself living in a situation where you think a home invasion is possible, well by all meen's please be prepared.

Go with a dedicated home defense shotgun. Take the plug out, use 4 shot and don't give a warning shot. Put the bad guy down for keeps.

Good luck, be safe.

Yes, there will be consequences, but you have a duty to keep your family safe. It's part of the job of being a husband and father.

the odds are, in your lifetime, that you will never need to protect your home armed. Airdrie has plenty of RCMP officers there and a quick call will be all that is necessary. Get your but into a room and barricade the the door. The legal industry frowns on people trying to protect their own lives and property.

Alot is written about it, and basically, anything from 00 buckshot to #2 will do just fine. Your spread at 3 - 20 ft will be small, so go to the range to see how your gun shoots

I feel that, given the guy isn't high as &/$@, the sight of two big black eyes looking at him would make most intruders want to take their chances with the law rather than Judge 12g.

Well put, the OP needs to understand that this is Canada, you will be prosecuted if you shoot someone in your home. There has been case after case in the last decade where people defending their homes or businesses with firearms have been arrested, prosecuted and jailed for doing so. Not to mention the tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.

Like Mutter said, tell them loudly you have a gun, if you have one, work the action a few times. Chances are they'll leave.

Some recent ones, people need to be informed. If you defend yourself in this country with a deadly weapon, even an axehandle like the guy in Taber, you will be prosecuted. You may get acquitted, like the fire-bombing victim, but you will drain your lifesavings defending yourself. So write your MP to have measures put in place to defend homeowners who defend themselves.

I saw this on a Shooting USA episode I believe. They tested 3 different types of rounds for self defense in the home, slugs, buck shot, and 7 1/2 shot. All three were shot through frames made of 2x4 and drywall that were used to simulate the walls in your home. They were setup 8-10' apart, and then each round was shot through them. The slug penetrated all three and kept going. The buck shot went through 2 walls, and was stopped by the third. The bird shot went through one wall, and was stopped by the second. All three made almost identical holes in the first wall. They said at close range like in a home invasion, all three were lethal, but the bird shot was the only one not likely to kill someone in another room...

My response was largely based on the content of the few posts that the OP has under his belt, and his choice in profile names. I wholly agree one should be able to defend their home by any means possible; but I also find asking a Canadian forum for "field reports" on shotgun ammo for home defense a bit curious, considering how few/none among us will have ever fired upon a human. Perhaps the military veterans might have input, but then I don't even know if the CF uses shotguns in combat like the Americans do. The best info anyone could provide is on how their shotgun/ammo worked on similar to human sized game.

We use Remington 870's in A-stan for breaching doors and shooting wild dogs that got too close. We even let our interpreter carry one with a dozen or so rounds of 00 buck, we never let him shoot it except on the range but he loved carrying that thing around!

To everyones who said "hide and wait for help"

When seconds count, help is only minutes away.

How much damage can an intruder inflict by the time someone shows up?
