I didn’t consider this chambering for long distance shots. But is nice to know it’s doable with the right bullets. I figured that I can’t see much past 300 yds anymore so I’ll try and find a good load with 210 partitions and go from there.

The 230 eldx would be a better fit for this

I have always liked the idea of a 338-06. I also like the idea of a 338 Federal and almost pulled the trigger on one. The 338 RCM looks great too and the 338 RPM but I don’t hunt with a brake and those two are out for me on a 7lb gun all in.
Also at this point I only consider rounds I have powder for.

I put together for a friend a 338-06 A Sq and with Barnes 185 x he was getting slightly over 3100 fps

I’ve heard great things with that bullet. But my thought is I want to launch a heavier bullet for my max range of within 300yds. Hoping to get the 210 doing close to 2800 fps is my goal. I’m old school and love partitions.

Built mine off a Sako m75 Greywolf back in 2008. New PacNor supermatch grade stainless barrel cut to 24", fluted. Mine is the AI version, mostly to be different. Shoots 225gr ABs and TTSX quite nicely . H414 with 210 primers. Shoot medium/hot loads to resize new Norma 338-06AS brass to fireform to AI.

I have not shot this rifle for a few years now...life gets in the way with 2 boys in hockey and coaching...but all is good. Maybe use this rifle for 2023 hunting season.

I have been tempted to build another off a Sako m75 again but going light weight with MacMillan stock and 22" barrel as a #2 or #3 barrel...maybe #3 fluted. Would consider the 185 or 210gr Barnes TTSX or the Accubond 180 or 200gr.

Curious, what does your current rig weigh? And why would you like to build another in a lightweight?
I get wanting a lightweight, but when does being too light make this chambering not enjoyable to shoot?

My incoming rifle is apparently around 7 1/4 lbs un-scoped. Which once scoped will be over 8lbs and for me is a touch on the heavier side of what I like.

And the 338RCM , which unfortunately is not supported by manufacturers anymore.

338 RCM has very similar ballistics to the 338-06
I have settled on 225 Interbond as the factory ammo shoots well.

But am interested in the 210 partitions when I have to reload.

Nice looking rifle.

Mine weighs in very close to a factory Sako m75 Greywolf in a "V" action (300WM/338WM) 3.8kg (8.36 #) then add Sako Optilock Ringmounts and Leoupld VX3 3.5-10x40 gunmetal grey scope....so my guess 9 pounds. That is what I wanted at the time-to be like a factory weight rifle.

Getting older now...lol . Just thinking of packing lighter weight rifle around. I dont think lighter will be to bad to shoot for me. I dont want a super light weight but something in the 7-7.5 pound range would be nice for full package weight on the shoulder.

My fatherinlaw had a cooper in this, and I might still have a bunch of brass

I’m hoping to get this one coming in around 7.5 lbs as well. Swapping the heavy optilocks out for talleys, choosing a light 3-9 and if need be trimming an inch or two off the barrel. We’ll see on that.
