Restricted registration real world wait times
I have two handguns waiting at dealers for registration. I know many of you have purchased recently so I would like an idea of how long it has taken to get your registration completed.
Thanks

Honestly, you could sit there and power call over and over again and it may be hours to get through on the phone, or it may be days... You better be prepared to just keep at it and hope you luck out on the hours side of things but fully expect not even getting a line for a long time.
I just went through it to complete a transfer and was luckier than most, but even still it was frustrating to call over and over again to not even get into the system only to finally get in the line and then have the call drop right away. It took hours...
Don't ask Twisted Canuck how long he tried before getting through finally or he might just pop a gasket! haha!

One buddy bought 2 handguns on May 31st (first day of the buying frenzy).
Had them in his hand June 7th, and they had to be shipped to him
Dealer purchases are quicker than transfers as mentioned above.

I bought June 3 and 4 so hoping to have something through the system soon. I am sitting on two thousand rounds of ammo...getting the itchy trigger finger.

At least buying from a retailer, you just have to wait for the paperwork to be processed, you don't personally have to try and call to complete a transfer. That is a special kind of hell right now. I think a week or so is the going wait time in AB currently, but it *will* get processed so patience is needed.

I work at one of the gun stores here in Calgary, we've been getting quite a few of the transfer confirmation notices from when the fire sale started on May 30 / 31st. Apparently only the buyer is receiving the notifications, so if you get yours in your email, be sure to let your dealer know. I've heard about 7-10 business days in Alberta recently.

I ordered 3, One on May 31, 2 on June 1. The first one and one other both came in yesterday (shipped) but the third just got its reference number on Tuesday and am expecting another week before I see it shipped.

I just got through to the Feds this afternoon (16th) to initiate 2 restricted transfers. I started phoning last Thursday (the 9th) morning at 9am., calling steadily through each day up to their 5pm. shut down.
I mainly used the 800-731-4000-1-4-2, and managed to get put on hold a few times for up to 40 minutes or so before they dropped my calls, most times I couldn't even get that far.
I also tried the 4000-1-6-1 but no one I spoke to there would do it.
I lost track of the actual number of tries, and know it was several hundred, but I'm retired and stubborn, so had lots of time to keep at it.
I hate to think how long it's going to take my 2 buyers to get through with their reference numbers.
All I can say is keep trying.

I received a message from Marstar this morning
The CFO of Alberta is not providing transfer notifications for Dealers. If you have an approved transfer, please forward us a copy so we can ship your order. Thank you
I don't know if this is just Marstar or all dealers, I'm still in "transfer in progress" since June 9

Purchased May 31 in the afternoon from Cabelas, got transfer notice the 24th. They promptly shipped it out the same day, due in my hands tomorrow. Purchased another later the same day from a dealer in Calgary, they put in the transfer 2 days later as I missed the range info when I purchased. With how stacked up it got, I am expecting at least another week.
I'm always surprised they don't have a streamlined system that puts multiple transfers under the same PAL together. If 1 gets done, the second (or more) shouldn't much more work to do at the same time.

My protest purchase at a retailer in Edmonton took 6 days. The registration certificate showed up 5 days later. Total: 11 days.
In normal times in Alberta, that’s an eternity. There was a time when I went into P&D in Edmonton at 10 am. Made my purchase and hung around to look at other things and gab. And I have gotten the e-mail notification in just over an hour. The certificate took longer, of course. But living in a firearm friendly province like Alberta does have its advantages.

I ordered 2, transfer papers came within 4-5 days. Both firearms were available in my hands within 10 days and one was shipped from Saskatchewan. Have not received the registrations yet… so I haven’t been able to shoot them.

Don't know when I'll get the certificate, I can't find in the regulations where it says I'm required to have to go to the range? Wouldn't the transfer papers be the same thing?

June 1rst to June 29th . Success yesterday ! about 25 minute wait and a pleasant gal finally answered that phone ! Guy I sold the pistol to called in Ref # and said he had about six voicemails and then got thru. So maybe after the rush on handguns the registry is getting somewhat caught up.

If you buy a restricted privately, does the vendor and the purchaser both have to call in to effect the transfer? What info does each have to provide. Is there an online option of any kind. Final question, where have you been finding the best place to find private sale ones advertised. Thanks.

Got the info I needed thanks, posted it on the other thread, Alternative Registration. If you guys are having that much trouble getting through I think the paper transfer system may be a very good option.

Still waiting for 2 pistols bought through dealers, and have not gotten any email communication about either purchases. I have reference numbers for both, but nothing from the government. One bought June 4th, the other June 8th.
