Default Skunk hunting?

I have not called SRD but I couldn't find it anywhere in the regs either, although I may have missed it.

The land owner where we have permission has a skunk problem. He has asked us to take care of them. Are we allowed to seeing as they are rodents or are they not considered pests?

Skunks can be hunted and trapped all year round

It is in the regs

Other Animals
Porcupine, rabbit, hare, raccoon and woodchuck may be hunted, but not trapped**, without a licence throughout the province, at all times of the year. Skunk may be hunted and trapped.

Skunks are not rodents. They are members of the weasel family.

I took out a skunk with my bow the other day while elk hunting. Not sure if the smell that it let out while expiring was a good cover scent or not though... I moved, and waited till the end of the night to retrieve my arrow.

As stated, perfectly legal, and most landowners will appreciate it.

Skunks are one of the number one predators of grouse...they eat eggs and the chicks. I like grouse therefore I do not like skunks

Shoot them in the head and most of the time the instant kill will keep them from spraying.

A direct shotgun blast from the side stops 'em too. We had a barrage of these critters last year but the shotgun and 10/22 got a work out. Shot the last one 22 Dec 2013 believe it or not! Waddling around in the snow, I took the waddle out of him._

Interesting thread..

Serious question.

What does one do with the skunks after they have been hunted?

Is there a market for the fur?

I can't imagine why one would want to hunt a skunk other that what Lefty has posted.

I am sure there are many valid reasons. I have never considered hunting or trapping them as I don't know why one would want to.

Well at my place they eat all my cat's food, and spray under my deck and in my shop, so I consider them a huge nuisance...that's why any skunk I see is a dead skunk.

Yes, there is a market for their pelt. The NAFA auction in May offered 7,557 skunks, 55% sold that auction at an average price of $5.36 and the top lot was $19.62.

Wow..

Thank you for the information!

I did not realize there was such a market for the pelts.

I ended up seeing another few. I arrowed one in the back woods, through the back of the neck. It didn't spray. It still had the stench but no where near as strong as if it had sprayed.
There was a couple of coyotes running around in the area as well so I let them have dinner and grow a bit bigger, hopefully to get one as well.

If I had my truck, I might have kept it but my truck is in the shop and I didn't want it in my car.
