They're pretty nice little rifles. They sure kick like a dag-gum mule in that little configuration, but a really nice carrying rifle for the bush.

I've got one in 308, great little gun and it does not kick much. My wife uses it when she comes hunting and shoots it at the range no problems. The only thing I would say is there is more muzzle blast/noise from the shorter barrel.

I had one in 223, I really liked it. But I will repeat what Rob said - they are loud.... Crazy loud.

My next door neighbor hasn't used anything but his compact ever since he bought it, about 9 years ago.
His is a .308 and he has a red dot sight on it, great bush hunting rig. My only gripe would be that they don't come with iron sights on them. Why make a bush gun without the option of irons?

I like the compact/short rifles. If I could find one for a good price I'd buy it.

Yeah, I like the low powered scopes too, but at some point I realised that while the distance I carry my rifle has steadily gone up, the average shot distance has steadily decreased. Its probably been 6 years since I made a shot over 100 yards, with most of them being well under 50... last year I probably packed a rifle 30-40 km total though. Even though a small scope doesn't weigh much I find that being able to close my hand right around the gun leads to noticeably less fatigue by the end of the day, rather than the more open grip one needs to use with a scope... plus the concern of keeping the scope clear when pushing through tree's loaded with snow or in bad weather... and it generally all ends in a 30 yard shot anyways... a guy begins to re-think the benefits of a scope.
Obviously tastes will vary, but for me I feel that going back to irons was a good move.

I have one in 7.62x39 and it is the perfect little deer gun. Lightweight, very compact 16.5" barrel and accurate.

If it lasts longer than 4 hours, call the gun shop.

I would consider the Ruger scout. Almost the same gun but with iron sights.

I have one in 7-08. I love it, but they are stupidly hard to find. Ruger still makes them but I am not sure they still export them to Canada. Best of luck. They are worth it.
