Reloading Bullets: Ballistic tips vs Bonded bullets
Hey everyone,
Another question to seek advice from people who know more on the topic than I do.
I am looking at reloading bullets for whitetail deer. 30-06 165 grain @ 2700-2800 FPS muzzle velocity.
I have traditionally shot (300 win mag @ 3200 FPS accubonds). But have recently moved to a 30-06
If the muzzle velocity is 2700-2800 am I better off going with a softer more rapid expansion than a bonded bullet at those speeds.
Animal Ranges from 20-400 yards
My initial thought is for Nosler Ballistic tips but wonder how the hornady SST compares. If it’s a bonded bullet it will be a Nosler Accubond.
Thanks in Advance

I’d pick the one that shot best and if there is no clear winner there I’d use the cheaper of the two. Either will work fine.

In my .30-06 I used the 168gr ct ballistic tips. No complaints about them.
Excellent on deer.
Hornady sst is not bonded. Hornady bonded bullet would be the interbond. Something in the middle would be their interlock.

You could just use a better constructed 165 bullet and use it on everything not just deer. Something like the swift scirocco 2 or the nosler Accubond. The moose bears and elk won’t know the difference.

Will you get adequate penetration on difficult quartering shots with an SST or Nosler ballistic tips from a 30-06? Yes, I know it's all about shot placement and a gut shot or butt shot with a big slug is unlikely to put them down soon, so let's not derail into that discussion.
Looking forward to input on the question posed above.
Thanks

You know the performance of the Accubonds in your 300WM, I would stick with them in your 30-06. But as mentioned, try a few different bullets and see what shoots best would be the better option.
I use ABs in my 300WM (180's), 338-06AI (225's), 270WSM (140's). Love the performance on the range and on big game.

Ballistic tips and accubonds of the same weight have the same bc
They should shoot pretty close to the same

Personally, at the velocities you are talking about I've always found mechanically locked bullets, like Corelocts or Interlocks, to perform well. But since you specified that this load will be specifically for whitetail, I don't think its necessary to even bother with that. A good old fashioned softpoint will give you pretty much ideal performance on deer.

Shoot the same as in if they shout the same they should follow the same ballistic profile? Because in general terms, they don’t always shoot the same and bc has precious little to do with that.

I’ve found that if you load ballistic tips and accubonds the same
They shoot the same
Might not happen for everyone
But the 5 times I’ve compared it, the difference was negligible

Some do, some don't. I have seen significant differences in group size, in at least two instances.

I have not found this to be the case at all.

I've had the same results. As a matter of fact I use the BT's for target work and switch to the same weight accubonds for hunting. 3 diff rifles and haven't had to adjust the scope. Works for me!

My experience, after loading them in several different rifles (I’ve been loading ballistic tips since 1990)is that there absolutely can be a difference in accuracy and in POI. I don’t care what instagram says. You need to check. Period. You can disagree with this all you wish, but that is my experience.

This is what Nosler says. Which is not at all what you said.

Yup, I change from BT’s for deer to Accubonds for moose without worrying about re-sighting. The difference is negligible in my rifle. It’s very convenient.

This actually indirectly answers my question as well where they state that accubonds are suited for large deer and ballistic tips are best suited for small and medium sized deer. I would say our deer are large and there in lies the answer to my question.

Moose and elk are large deer.

I agree. BT's for sighting in and paper. Accubonds for hunting. POI hasn't shown enough variance to be a concern for hunting applications but common sense dictates that you always check. I personally will not use SST's or BT's for any big game hunting.

My 30/06 hunting load is a 150gn SST bullet at 2960fps. It has killed deer, moose and elk without problems. Some of them dropped so fast, I thought I missed. Some of them required a second shot. The elk I shoot last year, was shot from behind at +/-150m and required a second shot. I found the core on the spine, totally separated from the cup.
I think SST is a good hunting bullet and more than adequate for your purpose.

If you say they work both the same in your rifle, then they must.
In some rifles maybe not so,but if they work well in yours why would say so if it's not true.
So I believe what your saying is true.
I tried both in 180 grains in my 300win and was pushing both at around 3090 and both shot almost the same.I did better at 3050,but I started to notice a bit of change around at 3140 so I settled for 3090 and both shot very close.
I tried both out to 400 yards and both groups were pretty decent. H1000 79.4 GRAINS.
So 165's in 3006 might work well also.

I’ll vouch for what Mark is saying. I went through this years ago and if you check the trajectory charts, etc that’s what they say. I tried both bullets on the range and sure enough both were near identical. It’s much easier to change mags than re-sighting or having a second rifle. Then again, you can just hunt with accubonds all of the time.

My one 7-08 likes BT's and Partitions, BT shoots 1/2" left, .5 gr difference in load, same powder and primer.
