Default fatty white

me and my lady saw the storm and heard it was going to blow over last night so we thought fishing should be fantastic after the storm. went out and it was a really nice night on the water. She was hammering the hell out of the whites. in 2 hours she hooked onto about 7/8 of them and landed 3 and had some bites that she missed on. we kept one of her bigger ones at 15 inches. Ironically, i didnt even get a single hit all night and we were using virtually the same thing. we decide to pack it up and call last cast. BAMM!! i get a hard it and start bringing him in a little slower so as to not freak him out because i didnt want to lose my only bite of the night. bring it up to shore and both our jaws drop. measured 19.5 inches and was FAT. we kept him cause we are going to do some smoking this weekend.

Wow, how do you get them to drink the vodka; blended with maggots?? Kidding of course but I have been flirting with the idea of pickling some pike in late fall once the water is cold. Any experience with that?

If you like fish soup and there are some good types the fat in them make them excellent for that.. My mother used to make an old country spicy fish soup very similar to the old Joeys Only spicy Hungarian fish soup,, she got the recipe from my fathers mom who was Hungarian.. She made it exclusively with white fish.. Man that was good soup.. It would stand the hair up on the back of you neck and make you sweat out about a months worth of beer but man was that good stuff..

Even fried its good you just have to fry it a bit longer to pull more of the fat out of it.. Personely I will take a white over lousy snot rocket any day..

thank you.

i catch my whitefish in the bow. i use a setup where i have a pencil weight and then tie two/3flies off of my main line and then cast upstream at a 45 degree angle or less and let it bounce on the bottom till it doesnt bounce on the bottom anymore then real in and repeat. there is an awesome diagram of this exact rig on a thread that i made on here when i couldnt catch white fish. search the forum for a thread titled "whitefish a myth in the bow". Tones of information in that thread. Just becareful. you WILL loose hooks and weights your first time out. when i go out i still lose 3-6 hooks and several weights. the coat hangers work great in the bow as weights but if your fishing a deep hole and you cannot feel the bottom then its better to use a 3/8 lead weight or whatever you need to reach the bottom. most people use royal coachmen, wire worms, san juan worms, or whitefish killers. but to be honest just explore and experiment with different things. those 2 whites in those pictures were both caught on lures that at the bottom of my flies because they were the weirdest looking.

Actually i am going fishing this weekend....... just not with you and not in calgary

i am actually taking my boat up to spray lakes for hopefully some big lake trout. i was actually thinking about it that i might even try for the rockies and the cutthroat there too. Nobody goes there to fish for rockies or cutthroat so there might be some fat cutthroat swimming around and no body knows it because no one fishes for them out there........

the upper section in the city is where i go. they are everywhere in the bow though. although the upper section is better to fish be cause the lower is really weedy and that is not good for this type of rig. so like really bowness area and up

went straightto the river after work and landed 2 more fatty whites in an hour. not as fat as the last one but still fat. 16 inches and 15.5 and fat scale read 1.8 pounds each. they are being bathed in hickory smoke as we speak........
