I was over the river in Edmonton today a few times and it looks like most of the ice has broke free, shouldn't be long now.

I'll be crossing over the river at least once or twice today in my travels. Yesterday I think they opened up the dam for a while. Early in the day the river was at it's roughly normal level, with not much ice coming down, and then around 5-6pm I crossed it again in the same spot and the water was VERY high, and there was a ton of icebergs floating down.

The flow from the dam may make the water look like chocolate milk, but at least it seems to be flushing a lot of the ice away from the shorelines.

Still froze solid at DV, waiting patiently. The water released from the res. is as pure as mothers milk, I beleave the chocolate color would be from the many creeks and runoffs between the dams and Edmonton. Good luck with the sturgeon.

I don't doubt that the water from the res is clear, but when they open it up and let fly, it flushes a lot of stuff downstream. Even when there's no runoff to speak of, it still turns brown when they open the dam.

At least that's the experience I've had out this way.

the water riseing so fast is from small ice jams along the river.... and then they let go and water comes down, then another will form and the water will start to rise again.....( think of how a beaver dam works...... ice is the same).

hey I was wondering is anyone willing to share some basic sturgeon fishing techniques and baits (how big, what to use and how to mix etc...) I am hoping to get out after them at some point either this year or next. As well where does one find them on the river are they in the deep fast runs, the shallows, big pools. Sturgeon and Gold trout are the only 2 kinds fish I have never caught that reside in alberta and it would be nice to know how to fish for them.

Never fished sturg. before but from what I hear a lot use stink bait .We use stink bait for carp and huge cats. best bait is mush liver. take a big pork liver rub it with salt and set it in the sun for a day or two will start to rot but salt will toughen the skin so its hard for them to pull it off.
