Default Boat throttle Engagement

I have an older (1984) carbureted, inboard motor. when unloading the boat, it stalls when I engage the transmission into reverse. But if I let it warm up for five or six minutes in the boat ramp, it doesn’t seem to do that. Also, when water skiing, it sometimes stalls when I hit the gas to get the skier up. It just started doing this a couple years ago. Any idea what it might be?

Might be the carburetor gumming up. I would try seafoam treatment in the gasoline and higher grade of gas. Seafoam instructions show a couple of treatment option. Use the higher ratio one

Kind of sounds like a carb issue. My dirt bike did something along the same lines and it was gummed jets.

I'd bet a good carb cleaning and you are set. Probably get a kit online and to your door in a few days.

Take it apart, soak it for a day or two, clean it up, put it back in and I bet this will get you on the right track. Adjust it (tune) as needed of course.

(I assume you did all the basic stuff like looking at the plugs, adjusting carb, spraying cleaner in there, etc..)
