Default 3D Shoots

How far are the farthest targets at 3D shooting competitions? Just wondering, would like to go but need to practice at longer ranges before entering.

Also wondering how the scoring is in these competions, do you have to shoot at longer range targets for more points or can you take closer ones and score less? As you can see, have no idea. Sounds like fun, wanna get into it.

Good post topic.

Most of the targets are under 30 yards and doable. The emphasis is more about shooting in different natural conditions rather than long distance. It is also a test of estimating distance which can be tricky in a forest or on a slope. I went to my first 3D with two dozen arrows thinking I would be losing a bunch and actually lost only one. I was surprised at how easy it was and then even more surprised how low I ranked. The 3D sport is a great lesson on teaching us the importance of accuracy and how hitting the animal is not necessarily hitting the target. In order to score well you must keep it in the "kill zone".
There are several different classes depending on bow type, shooter age, whether you use sights and releases.
I shoot with my kids aged 4/8/10 and the wife. The atmosphere is very friendly and there is no pressure to perform well. People are generally out to have some fun.

You will have a blast and improve your game.

Quick add on: I just came back from a 3D shoot. Three courses with 15 shots per course. All the courses were to be completed in the first day. Pick any two the second day. Shot at bears, moose, elk, wolves, turkeys, mountain lion, goats, etc.. At one shot you could put it through a old truck window, out the other side and if you hit the turkey, double points.
If you hit the animal target anywhere you get 5 points, 8 points for vitals and 10 points for heart. Guy who won first day had 452 points. I had 371 which put me in the middle of the pack. I never missed a target and only got a few fives. I consider myself an enthusiastic beginner.
Guys who shoot traditional shoot much closer to the target. Kids are usually around 10-15 yards. My daughter shoots from 5 yards.

Most shots are between 25-35 yards. Most shoots will have at least one or two targets out to 50 yards (max range for a sanctioned shoot). Usually it is a big target like a moose or an elk. Some shots will definitely push your limit, but that is how you get better.

The challenge is that it is all unmarked yardages. You have to learn how to judge distance.

Scoring is the same on every target 5, 8, and 10 (plus 10X or 11 at some shoots)

Join a club and get after it. Lots of fun and I guarantee that if you ask for help or coaching from the experienced guys you will get it.

No all shoots areinvitational...

even for the ABA shoots you do not need to be a member to shoot. The local club hosts the ABA shoot and then the rankings are calculated for seperate ABA awards for ABA members. Everything else at the shoot a shooter is eigible for... alll the draws, the fun... the good times etc.

I love to see new people coming out to have some fun and improve their skills!...

It is a great community and where else could a person have that much fun with their whole family at a sport.

See you guys at the shoots!....

See ya there!

But to your question, here's a big tip that will help you estimate range.

Cut it in half, most shoots will have a 50 yard limit, get to know 25 yards by looking at it.

So if something looks 21 yards half way, then shoot it for 42. Just a little tip in not letting Determining distance intimidate you.
