I was cop at the cabin and fished Calling lake this last weekend. I took the new sled for a tour and did some research on other fisherpersons successes. Over all slow during the day and better in the early morning. No whites, and no perch, one 15lb pike for one lucky guy (yes he took a picture and released it) and then the rest were 40-55 cm walleye for the most part, but again not many. We managed to bring home our limit, but it took four hours of fishing the best spots. By 1:00 pm on Sunday, I couldn't see a single fisherman, the fishing was that bad. Ice is about 40" deep. You still need pretty good tires on a 4 X 4 to get around. Don't be fooled, there is a lot of snow up there and if the flood water had not froze, no one would go anywhere without a sled. Three inches of new snow again this last weekend.

Things have been busy so not as much fishing this season, in fact yesterday for an hour or so was my first time out. We got tags for St Anne this year so I made my way by to check it out before taking the kids this weekend. (hopefully)

Saw some Walleye swim by in the camera, three of em together kinda high (odd?) in the camera, no interest in what I had down.

Eventually two Jack came around and checked things out for a good ten minutes before biting. It was funny to watch them circle each other before one swam off.

I fished right out my truck window, talk about easy to set up and pack up.

Went out Sunday. Three different locations on the lake. No bites, nothing. Might be last time I apply for walleye tags at Lac Ste Anne.

Fish in the back is a Walleye. The front fish could be a White.

Sun looks to be high up in the horizon, not the most productive part of the day typically particularly hard hit lakes.

kinda funny.

I've never caught a whitefish or even fished for them so I don't know what they look like, thought it may be something different but thought Walleye first.

What's the best thing to do when I see Whitefish? What do I catch them with? Or better yet, what is the easiest way to tell from a distance the difference between Walleye and Whitefish?

It can be tough on an underwater cam but a dead give away on a walleye is a big white spot on the bottom of their tail fin.

Neither of the whites in your picture are sporting that spot.

Thanks. I'll do a little more reading on this but good to know where to start.

The fork in the tail is the easiest way to discern them by sillouette. I just glanced at your photo on my iPhone on my way back from Diefenbaker and instantly knew it was a white by the tail.

Anybody willing to divulge a known area for a guy to take a few family members to fill their tags? I will own the fact that I've done no scouting, it's been a busy winter.

I was out all day yesterday by Rock Island.
The boat launch is getting pretty chewed up, but the road out to the island was nice and solid.
Ice was 27” thick. First 4-6” aren’t great, but everything below that was good ice.

Heads up if you are going out by the island, there are a few pockets of ice that have formed. They look like large iced over puddles. When broken, there is about a 16” drop down to solid ice. Its enough to get stuck in, and make you **** yourself.

As reported, very slow fishing. 1 nice walleye around 10:00, and then a nice size burbot at about 2:00.
Fished until 6:30pm

I'm throwing in the towel on Lac Ste Ann, lol. Started in January by filling a class A right away. That ended up being our only one. Tried all of the usual spots up until this past Sunday. I only recall seeing one other person catch a fish in my 5 or 6 times out. Our whole family of 5 had tags, lol. Anyway I'm going to Saskatchewan for the rest of ice fishing. Good luck all.

Finally a little luck. Caught my first Walleye of the season Sunday night and then went again with the kids yesterday, 4 Walleye between 6 and 9. Almost got the tags filled. A couple of chunkers in the group, should make for a great meal. The Jacks were hitting pretty hard as well, I think we had 7 on and plenty of bites, you could see them flying around on the camera.

Went out today. North side entrance. Little chewed up. Some water, however the lake is good. 24” ice. The top layer is going away. Truck sinks about 2” into the slush. Cooling down now for next couple days. Still slow. Maybe evenings better. Noticed commercial fishing going on. Maybe why I am not catching fish.

There is a net. What is it, if not commercial fishing? Two holes approx 100 yards apart, with line tied at both ends, along with a number on the stakes?

Am out at yellowstone right now. Haven’t even seen a fish. To say it has been slow all year is an understatement.

Hasn’t been commercial fishing in Berta for years. Either natives or poachers. Maybe even native poachers…

We spent Saturday on the ice near West Cove. No pike or walleye seen but one perch did swim by. First time tasting tag soup. Needs pepper.

Was out Saturday with the kids and we filled our remaining 3 tags. Fished from 6:30 until about 8:30 in 6 to 8 feet of water. Lots of bites and even caught 2 more while pulling in our tip-ups for the night. I was out solo on Friday from 7:30 to 9:00 in the same area and only caught a couple small pike. Very hit and miss this year.
