Water bombers don't do much in 100 kph winds. Fire does what it wants. Bombers might be useful on the back lines and flanks! Sprinklers on buildings are the only things that work.

I just heard from my wife's friend that Canyon Creek is engulfed in fire. They lost their house, but they are safe, and are in Slave Lake at the Walmart parking lot. I just wonder how safe a parking lot is, if they are landlocked by fire???

Unhappy

Just talked with my cousin and family. They are sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot watching as houses go up one after another.

Residents were instructed to head to non combustible areas such as the the airport and large parking lots like Walmart. Highway 2 east is now open so people can start leaving.

Just read that they have fire crews coming in from Ontario and BC

These people our in our thoughts and prayers makes our worries seem pretty minor.

I worked up there for a year and I sure hope everyone up there comes through this in one piece. Thought and prayers go to everyone caught in this tragic event.
Just goes to prove that no matter how much we think we can control the things around us, Mother nature will not be controlled.

“It’s changing by the minute. The wind is so strong, it’s chasing the fire in all kinds of directions,” Valerie Tradewell, a councillor in Slave Lake, said earlier in the day.

Alberta already had 1,000 firefighters on watch throughout the central part of the province, but they were outmatched. Another 200 will arrive as soon as Monday, with more on the way, Mr. Knight said. “Our crews are fighting not only fires, but weather,” he said.

Hospital and RCMP station burned down. Someone from my FB posted a couple blurry photos of the Ford dealership on fire. My FB is moving a mile a minute from all the updated statuses from the people I know in the area. I've read that all of Canyon Creek is gone too.

All the air tankers departed Lac La Biche this morning loaded up for slave, but looks like there all grounded at the airport now in Slave since the crosswind is too strong to land/takeoff. Should be interesting when the fire hits the airport and JetA and all. Lac La Biche has a fire south west with 13 choppers and the local fire departments fighting it.

Also heard the sawridge blew up in slave.

There were 5 fires burning in Lac La Biche County today. A few more in Athabasca County including one at Al-Pac.

This Slave Lake fire situation is a total disaster. So sad.

I talked to Jamie, you need to call there with your credentials, see if they are taking men without equipment. We are on ready alert according to the Head of the County Fire Dept, but Jamie says bring anything you can.

My heart goes out to the people of Slave Lake. I wish I could help.

Anyone has news about Fort Mcmurray? Are people safe there?

Thoughts and prayers sent from this end. May the only loses be the ones that are replaceable. There's going to be some hard questions asked once this is all said and done. Be safe folks.

Elcaholic,

I hope not.

My in-laws are up in Fort Mac right now. They are safe, although there is a fire burning north of them, but I think its a smaller one under control.

I just talked to our fire chief, we are getting ready bags filled for if and when we get the call. Anyone with experience that has availability to equipment coordinate with your department, we can maybe carpool there if we go.

There is 3 burning between swan hills and Kinuso that I know of, one is pretty big and close to a gas plant, the other just started and the third one was off in the distance, could only see smoke. I got pic of the one by the plant today.

Good job guys. For people who have family and friends in Slave you're doing a fantastic job. Seems like information is coming here faster than anywhere else and I've been Googling for information non-stop.
