Default Best chance at catching fish from shore near Banff

Hi everyone,

I was hoping I could get some direction on where I'll have the best chance of catching fish from shore near Banff. I'm camping with a friend of mine who is interested in getting into fishing and it would be nice to catch something to keep him interested. We're staying at the Tunnel Mountain campground. Willing to travel by foot or car and will be using spinning tackle. Any help is appreciated!

If you want to avoid buying a national park fishing licence you could drive out of the park and go east of Canmore a couple of miles. There is Grotto pond or Gap lake right along Hwy 1A. Small spinners, spoons or small rapalas from shore might work this time of year. Or a fly 6 feet behind a float and casted out and retrieved slowly.

Hopefully someone will post a few better places.

You could try Spray Lake and cast small, sinking cranks from shore. I've just parked at the Driftwood area and walked the shoreline. In my limited times of fishing there, this has worked for me.

Could try Two Jack lake below Minnewanka, the campground area and along the river.

Best bet would be to hike along Johnson Lake until you get the the 'local's beach', a grassy area right by the lake. Chuck out a size 8-14 prince nymph under a float and kick back and relax. Twitch the line every once in awhile. Early in the a.m. or later in the evening are the best times. Lots of good eddies and pocket water on the Bow river just downstream of Bow Falls, use smaller spoons. Have fun!

The Bow along the back of the golf course has always been fairly productive for small browns. Just look for the fishy water along the shore and give it a go.
