Default CNRL Oil Spil

From the Edmonton Journal...

"WOLF LAKE — On its East Primrose site, CNRL crews cleared trees, hauled out oily peat from the muskeg and worked to locate the long, narrow fissures Thursday that have allowed bitumen to leak to the surface from deep underground.

So far, 7,300 barrels of bitumen have been removed from four spill sites on the company’s in situ oilsands project in the Cold Lake Air Weapons range, 300 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

That includes bitumen leaking into Wolf Lake."

This leak could dwarf Wabamun.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that bitumen is leaking into Wolf Lake

This has been an ongoing issue since May. They have determined the size is about 1/3 of the original estimate. There is always some oil making its way into the streams and lakes. I have fished rivers where you could pretty much see the oil coming out of the ground, and not a oil well within 100 miles.

Hopefully they will get it cleaned up and dealt with before any of the surrounding water bodies are badly affected.

As stated above, some bitumen naturally flows into northern lakes, rivers and streams. I remember as a kid swimming in the Clearwater or Hanging stone river, I would actually get oil stains in my cloths. Oil can be seen oozing from the banks of the Athabasca, Clearwater, Horse, House, Hanging Stone, and pretty much any other stream in the Ft Mac area. I'm no biologist, and have no idea the ecological effects of it, but I do know it naturally occurs. I hope they find the leak soon in any case.

CNRL is the most chicken**** operator around. I've been in the patch for 26 years & I dread going to work for them. I'm sure it's much worse than what they say. They still think it's the 70's

Yup. They are definitely a "sweatshop" kind of company from my personal work experience with them.

I just hope they can correct the problem. CNRL no doubt tries to do the bare minimum.
