Default Walleye fishing

Hey guys and girls , just a quick question , should I be using a leader for catching walleye , I always have , but I don't know if I would get better catch rate if I didn't ?
Thanks

Quick answer is yes but use Flourocarbon leader as it is virtually invisible.

12 lb. mono should work just fine. I just use a small snap swivel to hook on my lures or jigs. If you don't use a swivel of some sort, you will find your line may get twisted. You can also put an inline swivel 8 or 10 inches above your lure and tie your lure right onto the line. This eliminates the need for a snap.

In my experiences, walleye can be downright cautious around steal leaders. I avoid them, altho I lose a few lures to unwanted gaters,..using 10 lb. fluro.

I never run steel for eyes and I find much higher catch rates on lighter line. The inline swivel idea will serve great purpose. I love flouro and I almost never use anything but flouro no matter the species. It has a refractive index almost identical to water, hence why it's near invisible. As a material it has great strength and abrasion characteristics. BUT..... It's not strength can be poor if one is not careful, plenty of lube is necessary. I tighten my knots slowly as friction and heat will increase if one is to just rip it tight.

Default Walleye fishing

I was born and raised in Northern Manitoba, when Walleye fishing for quality and quantity we always used 6 or 8 lb test line and tied the lures directly to the line, no leaders.

I tie direct to hook as well, but I use flouro as a leader. It gets expensive to spool a whole reel in quality flouro.

Default Hammer Handle heaven

I always have tied right to the jig head ,spring vertical ,tie barrel swivel
On 2ft. Up the line , keeps the twisting down , those small jacks will bite you off
Mono , or fluorocarbon , I make 3 inch ,stainless leaders , snap one end
Twist loop the other. The snap ( no swivel ) keeps the jig straight up.Doesn't seem to bother the eyes , and the pike can just be
Shaken off ( barbless). There's no doubt when I cared about fish size 6 lb.
right to the jig. There just didn't seem to be that many snot-rockets
Back in Manitoba. My partner always uses a leader and catches some pretty big eyes for south -Ab ....I think how you jiggle your pole is more important .

Same - swivel after my main line, then 6'+ of Fluro... usually 8 or 10 lb test. And heed FisherPotch's advice on lube and knot instructions
