Default Jimmy Hoffa is ALIVE!

Apparently Jimmy Hoffa has resurfaced right here in Calgary.
Very glad to see the actual workers trying to fight this thing. Its the thin edge of the wedge as far as Unions go.

When did a vote turn into a bad thing? God I can't wait for these clowns to be thrown out of office.

Smile Bwahaha! laughing away

This is the best part of the entire story:
Quote:
One of the workers, who said they voted for the NDP in the May 2015 election, is urging Premier Rachel Notley to make private votes required if a majority of workers ask for one.

“My rights as a worker have been trampled. I am having troubles now making ends meet. I feel totally violated. I hope by speaking out, Rachel Notley will change this undemocratic law.”
We need to hear more stories about NDP voters being financially inconvenienced by their decision. Eventually it may sink in that they are part of the problem.

I have a friend who has eyes that really remind me of Osama Bin Laden, but he's not 6'6" and he's Mediterranean rather than Arabic.

The union tactics are not surprising. Not all unions are like that, but more will be getting that way considering who's at the helm begging for union support. And to target the new Canadians no less, shame on them!

Unfortunately, bullying, misleading, unethical and dirty tactics like these don't surprise me in least bit.

Our business runs both unionized and non union shops and I can clearly see the difference in both when it come to dealing with my union yard/facilities and with my non-union yard/facilities. We have 2000+ employees in Alberta alone.

My role is one where I have overall management responsibility for operations across a much larger region (Canada). I am pretty hands on with the Management team and pride myself on listening and collaborating with the management team on each site.

I am the same guy working for the same company with the same management style YET the amount of trickery, deceit and attempts of the "memberships representative" to constantly and needlessly stir the pot and cause unnecessary BS, sabre rattling and fist pounding is just ridiculous.

I know I treat all sites the same - I send the same emails and communications to both the managers/superintendents of the unionized and non-unionized sites YET problems only seem to come from one direction.

It seems to be that unions are a great business - and unless the members think they are adding some value by "defending" them and "standing up for the little guy against management aggression" they present very little value otherwise.

I hope people (and workers) figure out when and where a union is needed (there are some cases where the value is real and there is a mutual benefit) and figure out those places where it's just a BIG SCAM.

Like the story. Ironic isn't it.

Must have been a slow news day to blame Union Thugs for this.
Obviously the guys didn’t read the fine print in which they where signing their collective names to.

This doesn’t make a bunch of sense. If you aren’t part of the union, how do you owe them 250 dollars at the start of the story?

As though some of the new arrivals to Canada could even read what they were signing, or had any idea what a union rep even is. Might was well have told a group of grade two students to 'sign here'. These workers wanted the benefits the person promised them, but with their entry level wages that skim off the top of their next cheques hurt quite a bit. The union organizer sounds like they didn't explain the entire story of what they were up to, some might well have thought he was from the human resources dept of their employer.

Again Painting us Union Thugs with the same Bread Brush.

I fight and strive for equality in the workplace for everyone.

Be it a women working along side a man for the same rate of pay the same pee breaks to the right to organize or not and all done fair and square.

There are SCAB Unions out there and there are some Great Employers who offer better rates and conditions than a Union Shop.

I'm not trying to recruit for the Union here in Alberta, you guys can make the choice yourself or have made the choice to slag those who have made an educated decision.

Couldn't have said it better. I don't know too many people collecting not one but two defined benefit pensions, but thanks to a strong union and good bargaining my coworkers and myself are. Though it has been awhile since there was a union bashing thread.

Way back in the 1980s an attempt was made to unionize the company that I worked at. Yes some good salesmen tried convince us just how much better off we would be if we signed up, but the first time that some people attempted to resort to intimidation, they soon found out that they were the ones that had something to fear if things became ugly. In those days the workers stood together without any official representatives, and anyone that turned on the other workers didn't last long. Moving to a few years ago, the entire attitude of the workforce has changed. The workers demographics are far different with many newer Canadians, and the workers were segregated into multiple social groups primarily based on their country of origin. These groups do not support one another, and these people will turn on each other for personal gain. As a result, the workforce can be much more easily manipulated, or intimidated than 30 years ago. With no unified opposition, I can actually see how a union could use tactics like this to unionize the company , even though the unionized workers in the industry enjoy no better benefits or working conditions than the workers at the company that I used to work at. As to changing the law to do away with a private vote, that is the type of socialist policy that I expect from the NDP. They will do whatever they can to buy votes, because they know that unions are their largest supporters.

I would love to see the data that proves that statement. The benefits, wages and retirement security trade unions bargain for affect all labour, not just unionized ones. Non union shops have had to up their game in order to keep people working.

If your a blue collar worker in this province and think the NDP is your enemy, you should do some real research.

Anyone that causes businesses to shut down, or layoffs to occur, resulting in jobs being lost, all while raising taxes, is an enemy of the blue collar worker.

We agree to disagree
I don't think the Provincial government was the cause of the economic issues and I think they have done well trying to mitigate those issues and also making this Province much more labour friendly then they found it. Labour code, minimum wage and WCB reform are just some examples.
That said, we are all concerned about the debt and taxes and the debate whether that helped or hurt with the economic recovery will continue for a while.
Should be an interesting election cycle.

The current government did not create the economic downturn, but their response just drove away investors, resulted in more layoffs, and created more taxes that are accomplishing nothing but reducing our standard of living.

The funny thing is that local 1111 does not even exist anymore. One of the "executives" Rick Marten made a whole bunch of money "disappear". All Alberta unionized labor is now under the jurisdiction of local 92 Edmonton.

For the record I always thought Mr Marten was a complete AZZ as well as very dishonest.
