Ya, I keep my rifle in hand all day, I don't even have a sling on my rifle anymore... thus the problem with my nearly 9 lb .270 as I get older.

I (regrettably) gave my Winchester Model 94 30-30 to my brother a few years back....couldn't take not having it for bush whitetail so bought a new Model 94 short this year....6 lbs, 20" barrel, Fusion 150 grand ammo....great for 100 yards or less.

I like a light rifle with a shorter barrel, and in a bolt action. Bolt open going through tight spots, and it is quiet enough closing the bolt on an animal 20 yards away that it doesn't spook them.

My bush rifle definition
Short light rifle and large heavy bullets
Using a short rifle in a blind is must easier to handle
If you can only see 100 yards max why carry an extra 4-8" of barrel
Shooting big heavy bullets makes bigger holes going in and out
Pushing through thick brush or red willow is easier with a shorter rifle
Shooting moose at long distance can lead to tracking and searching for wounded animals.
A 40" rifle can fit sideways across my quad
Sights should be open sights or a low power scope with a wide field of view, I have detachable mounts on mine to remove the scope when hunting in a ground blind
I choose a 350 Rem. mag still quite capable of 300 + yards however it would have to be in a wide open clear cut to see where the animal went before I pulled the trigger on it.

Its a good way to justify having more than one gun if I only hunted with one rifle life would be boring.

Most bushes in Alberta have cut lines, that's why a 100yd or less rifle is not in my locker.

You guys crack me up.
Do you work for the coalition for gun control or the LPC?

"You only need one rifle, a do it all"...blah blah blah.

I hunted for a good many years with a single big game rifle. Tight cover, open fields, on point during drives, pushing bush, you name it. And yes it worked.

As finances became more lavish I bought more rifles, some simple because I had a hankering, some are dedicated to a purpose, some are a bit more utilitarian.

Vanilla ice cream is fun and ok, but let's face it some days tiger tail or rocky road are what a guy craves.

If we limit ourselves to nothing but utilitarian applications and desires, the bad guys will succeed in their agenda.

Go buy a rifle,, one you are just curious or intrigued about, and hunt with it.

I got tired of having so many flavours - my Ruger is the Tiger tail ice cream of firearms!

Yes, 1 Harvesting rifle to do what we need it to do.

From thick bush to no bush.
Close up and personal to extend distances at our choosing.

Buy or build what we need to fit our Harvesting styles, and get at it.

Its nice that folks pick and choose what works.

Some folks with many rifles, others with one.

Default Win 88/308

My main gun for bush or cut lines has always been my Dad’s model 88 in 308. It wears a VX-I 3-9x40.
But, I have several other lever guns, shotguns or muzzleloaders that get used when the 88 gets too much attention.
You can throw a crossbow in there too.

I guess my Ruger #1 in 9.3x62, it’s a caliber that had interested me for years Got my first mountain whitetail with it last year, hunting in the woods is now my favourite. Would still like a lever gun in 444 or 450 Marlin, but until then I’m happy with what I have.

Tikka ts lite 6.55 x55,light to carry around,i don't worry about putting a ding in it comes in at 6 pounds without scope, but a burris EI ,talley rings good to go for just over a grand.Resale as same as paid.Barrel last for a long time, ammo is not hard to find, plus reloading bullet choice is better than every.

Etremely accurate and good for deer to moose.

I like a short ,light rifle for everything. My sheep rifle is 39" long and my bush rifle is 37" long. The sheep rifle can be used for anything though but I like firearms so I have quite a few.Either way it has to be a levergun.

I hunt in Alberta. Choosing not to hamstring myself with a certain cartridge does not make me anti gun.

How does the field of view on your scope work out at a running whitetail 40 feet in the bush?

I know that Chuck likes a 6X scope, and at 40 feet it is no worse than a 2X scope on a runner through bush - the scope is not the issue when shooting at something running in bush with all the sticks around!

This is exactly the point. If you hunted with a bag full of rifles then pack the putter. But you don’t. So pack something that works for any scenario.

X how ever many it is. I carry a Finnlight 30-06 that is light to carry and reasonably short with a 22 =/- barrel. It kills close up, far away and anywhere in between that killing might need done.

As far as open sights shooting through heavy bush with big bullets, that myth has been proven false on numerous occasions. A person is much better off with a good optic so you can thread the needle if need be. Those firing at running game in thick bush should take up grouse hunting with a shotgun over dogs so they can understand how unlikely a good result is with a rifle in hand.

I got a win94 legendary lawman trapper that I wanna use as a bushgun. Probably gotta upgrade the sights on it over the factory ones though.

What I do is make sure the first shot is good. After that if the deer starts running i keep shooting until it goes down. I'd rather know for sure I have a down deer. Then to have one that got wounded because my bullet deflected, shot was off a bit, or deer moved. Thats where the advantage comes in with having a semi, pump, or lever with open sights in the bush. Pretty easy to get back on target and unload a few more rounds IF need be. Ideally the first shot would do the job, but we all know how that goes sometimes.
