Default Blacksmith tools at auction.

Went to auction outside of Barrhead yesterday evening. Was interested in some of the blacksmith tools. A handful of homemade tongs went for $130. A swage block for $1300. $1000 each for a #200 and #250 anvil. Couple of hundred bucks for a leg vise. Had no idea the prices this stuff fetches.

Them were some healthy prices. One ever knows at an auction what something will bring. A thousand at one auction and twenty bucks at another.

Blacksmithing is becoming a pretty big hobby and those old tools never wear out. 1300 for a swage block!

Yep! Long gone are the good old days of pricing at a buck a pound for anvils...

To me it looked like all the equipment was purchased over time, probably in auctions, but never used. Didn’t see any coal or steel laying around in any of the buildings on the site. The 200# anvil was in real good shape. Going into this auction, I was told 5 to 7$ per pound on a good anvil.

At those prices, you'd think there would be a market for turning Fords into anvils.

Last few auctions I’ve been to, all the tools went way too high. Guys were paying more than new prices for outdated tools that they could buy new, cheaper. Anvils and blacksmithing tools, stupid high prices. Not going to waste anymore time trying to get any deals on tools at auctions anymore. For myself, it’s a waste of time and fuel.

That’s what I have observed at auctions this spring and summer. Lots of rich people in Alberta.

Just an update on that online surplus auction that needed last night. The 140 lb anvil went for $1400 +GST. A brand new anvil from Edmonton Blacksmith Shop goes for the same price per pound.

Ahh yeah but the sound of the auctioneer's voice, eh! Then there's the chance to BS the neighbors, and catch up to who's up to what, or who.
