Bullet choice for Elk or moose
I'll throw this question out to those who may have the experience to answer. The son has been invited on a fly in hunt in Northern BC. He will hunt for elk and/or moose with his SAKO .270. I handload for the rifle and currently it is shooting 140 grain Accubonds or Hornady SSTs. Is that enough bullet at 140 grains or should we work up a load with something heavier?
We normally just hunt deer or antelope.

I like the 150gr. heavy for caliber bullets but you will be just fine with what you have now.

With good shot placement and within reasonable distances, your existing load should work well. Good luck wishes for a great hunt.

140 accubonds are great no need to change. The 270 guy in my hunting group uses the 130 sciroccos for everything it’s his go to and it works well even on elk.

130gr. Accubonds knocked this bad boy down. I would stick with the Accubonds.

Ditto.
If you change to anything, go to the Barnes TTSX 140gr.

Yep. If they are shooting well you can’t beat it. That may have been my choice even before you said you were already loading them.

My first choice(for everything really but especially moose)is a mono like TTSX/GMX etc.....Accubonds are fine,SST are a deer bullet, moose are not deer.
Now before the SST fanboys get their panties in a twist...yes of course SST will kill moose in a perfect world and I don’t care how many moose you’ve killed with SSTs,I’ve seen light jacketed bullets designed for light thin skinned game perform very poorly on moose, pick the proper bullet for the job.

Agree. SST are accurate for me but not my choice for moose. If you like Hornady the interbond is a good option.

Accubond
I was really wondering if the accubonds would withstand high velocity close range impacts on hard object (bone) so my son cut up some 2x4 in one foot lengths 14 inches deep and screwed them together in a cross pattern and shot them at about 50 meters.3 shots all penetrated 13 3/4 inches of wood, with perfect mushroom,I have pics of the Bullets after the test not sure how to upload them, but I’m convinced 100% with them.all test Bullets are 225 grain fired at just under 3200 FPS from a 338 Rum.I will weigh them and post the weight %asap good luck with your choice

Accubond 140gr will do great. Go with what you already have accurized, and practice practice!

Yep the accubonds will smash through anything
I ran the 250gr out of my 338 rum
Nothing ever took a step
I have some of the 265 ablr’s but not much data available for them
Everyone seemed to have jumped on the hornady band wagon and dumped the noslers. Better marketing team lol

Shot placement
Shot placement and distance in the key with my 7MM and 140 gr Supremes for moose. Distance is no Issue when I used my 300 Win Mag and 180gr. Either one with a well placed shot, I have only used one bullet to knock em down.
Energy left at that distance is important. Research you bullet.

Hole the size of my fist in the ribs and the bullet opened as advertised, I pulled it out of the far side shoulder. Cow went about 20 yards and tipped over.

Same could be said for Nosler ballistic tips, yet my FIL uses them exclusively on elk and has never had an elk escape him yet.
OP stick with the accubonds, that’s what I’ve been loading up in my 270wsm and if all goes well I will have results this fall!

I've shot several deer, elk, moose and bear with ballistic tip, and it's a great bullet. They barely make another step after impact. The one that ran the most, was a deer, he maybe went 30 yds, 3 or 4 jumps.
People are over thinking when it comes to bullet construction. Keep in mind, no animals live with a hole in the lungs.
On another note, the only elk I lost, was shot with barnes triple shock, I hit it a bit far back (in the liver), and the bullet probably did not expand and left next to no blood to follow and we lost signs after half a mile.

Trapper I knew North of Peace River would usually shoot his moose with a 22 long rifle bullet in ribs, would just get close. He would go back to cabin, have a coffee then come back and dress the moose, he did not like to ruin to much meat.
A well placed shot from any rifle in the lungs will drop most large animals.

Where's everyone buying their Accubonds? Having a tough time finding them in the Calgary area.
