Depends on what you plan on hunting, but the 257 has quite a bit more punch than the 240 does. If you don't reload, have you priced out ammo yet? Weatherby ammo is $$$.

Never shot a 240 but I feel that the 257 WBY is the most versatile and most advantageous of the Weatherby calibers. My 257 drives tacks with 100gr bullets touching just under the 3700 fps mark.

The 240 is a great caliber for deer and antelope. However the 257 will do anything the 240 does and do it better. (for big game)

If you main goal is wolves, coyotes and the odd deer, the 240 would be a great option.

If the main purpose of the rifle is for big game hunting take the 257.

wbyguy, what action were you thinking of? the 257 is available in many more commercially produced guns than the 240 is pretty much wby mark5/vanguard only(i could be wrong here)
i agree with big chevy...
it does everything in alberta, including the special draw elk and moose..if i didnt have a 257, id be snuggling up to a 270wby..its a hidden gem.
it does have limitations that you have to be understood.
-you cant expect the rifling to hold up your disintegrating gophers all afternoon or pounding 100's of rounds per year.
-reloading is a must, ragged edge topend fullhouse rounds are normal, otherwise consider a hot 25-06, it will do you better.
-once you find a loading your happy with, a couple of confirming shots per year and it will last a looong time...
-you may only see 1000 rounds total out of your pipe. mine is getting a new gain-twist right now. 12 years x 80-100 rounds per year..its done.
-think of the weatherby cartridges as using a 1/4 mile dragster to get groceries.

The 257wby is said to be Roy's favorite, that's gotta say something.

Default .257 Weatherby

For anyone interested, Frontier Firearms has an unbelievable deal on .257 Weatherby ammo. $290.00 for 8 boxes of 100 gr spitzer.

The Vanguard S2 is a great rifle for the price.
I bought one just to try it out and shortly after shooting it, I bought another.
I have a .243win and a 257wby in the S2.
Both will shoot 5 shot groups under 3/4 of an inch.

I would look at the 240 and the 243 as light kicking options for your gf. I am def a fan of Weatherby cartridges but if your going to be shooting gophers or lots of target shooting, the 243 is a much better option. Cheaper brass, burns less powder and has a much better barrel life. It's a tough call, but you wont go wrong with the S2.

Don't forget to budget for a decent quality scope. After shooting bushnell and Leupold for many years I picked up a Zeiss a couple seasons ago. Needless to say the only rifle I have still wearing a Bushnell is my .22lr.

If I was buying an ultralight then I would go 240 as the action is smaller and the 6 lug MKV is amazing. If it's a Vanguard then I would buy either depending what I was shooting. I want a 240 more than a 257 but both are cool rounds.

Really no more than any premium ammo. Watch the sales I just picked up 4 boxes of Wby 257 100 gr Spitzers that my Wby loves for $38 a box

That thread is (was) very old - and Weatherby Ammo is far cheaper today than it was back then actually.

I've picked up boxes at $50-$60 compared to maybe 10 bucks less for my 308 or 30-06 ......... ammo cost really not a big factor.

I have a Weatherby Ultra Light LH in 257. With the Cheap Weatherby Select Ammo, $48 a box, 100 grain at 3600 FPS, it will easily do 1/2" 3 shot groups. It will do better than that with handloads. Plenty of gun for everything we have in Alberta and not much kick for such a light gun. Not sure I would want this model in 300 Bee.

Have never had a 240 but I have had 3 different 257's over the years and I would have to say that the 240 can't keep up, the 257 handles heavier bullets and carries more terminal energy all the way out, and with hornady precision hunter 110 gr ELDX it is light out, the one I have now is a vanguard first light and I love it.

Just my 2 cents worth.

How did you do find the recoil in the.257 what would it be comparable to?

I'd say they kicks less than a 30-06 ........ to me that's kind of the sweet spot before recoil starts to be a factor for most shooter (particularly if you are on the bench doing a load development and taking repeat shots).

I'd say somewhere between 243 and 30-06

With my vanguard S2 which has the #2 contour stainless barrel it was very manageable really couldn't tell the difference from my 270 with a 130 gr, in my vanguard first light which is also the #2 contour barrel but fluted and comes with a factory muzzle brake, it's loud but the recoil is less than a 243, it's a powder puff, laid down an antelope this fall at 327 yards, it's a flat shooting sob.
