Thumbs down Barbed hooks are awesome...again...

I found these flies in a bush beside the Bow River this morning; seems someone neglected to pinch his/her barbs down???

I thought only spin fishermen broke the rules; I guess fly folk ain't perfect, either...

I rarely find a hook with a pinched barb.

I worked all night, then hit the Bow in town with my bro'. It was pretty slow early, but I had a nice brown slam an egg-sucking leech out in the middle of the river...

Couldn't scare up anything else there, so we drove to another stretch of the river. I landed a gigantic whitefish...

My bro' headed home a few minutes too early. I finally found a cast of flies that worked, eventually landing fish on all 3 flies. First was this 21" brown, just minutes after my bro' left...

Just out of curiosity, I compared to a pic of a brown I got in the same spot 5 weeks ago...

Definitely the same fish.

Guess I'll have to finish this story tomorrow. Imageshack froze up, so I can't post any more pics. Long story short, I got another whitey, 2 more browns & 2 rainbows after this. Details & pics to come...

I find the fish don't spit the hook as easy when using a barbed hook.....with a non-barbed hook I lose more fish.....

Looks like Imageshack is working again, so I can post more pics.
Here's another shot of the 21" brown I got today, showing the opposite side; the next pic is from 5 weeks ago. Nice to catch him again...

He ate this nymph this time around...

This whitey ate the always reliable San Juan Worm...

I got distracted by ladybugs for a while...

Next up was a 15" brown...

Followed by a 19.5" rainbow...

Yep, had me into my backing twice! Ha-ha-ha!!

More pics...

An 18" brown...

Ended the day with a good-looking 18.5" rainbow...

Bye-bye!

'Twas a fun morning. Every trout jumped at least a couple times; they were full of p1ss & vinegar today!

'Til next time!

I swear those must have been planted by jealous spin fisher people. The water must have caused the barbs to grow back.

Quality pictures again, Steve. Thanks for taking us along on a photo trip.

Not really for you to decide whether "ethically" there is a difference or not...

Fact is, barbed hook is a BI$## to pull out of a fishes mouth, it always takes longer and requires more handling of the fish. If thats not an "ethical" difference...................................

Gus, I had to google "poncy".

That's just a low blow right there.

Fishin in BC last week I was using a barbed treble hook with a fat dew worm. Reminded me of the 80's. Got me a good bull trout on'er too.

Regardless of the method it is always better to go braless.

Super job as always Bob. I fished the bow yesterday too and was just wondering. I found these by the river. Do they work??? Didn't get to try them as all I had was flies.

Might I suggest a bigger spool on your reel?
if you went up one reel size for your rod, you would have such a hard time with hogs like that whitey!!
