Traffic deaths are an unfortunate fact of life, do we start tallying the deaths of people driving to or from work up there as 'workplace related deaths' or 'oil sands related deaths'? Of course we don't, in the exact same context that you shouldn't with these.

The referenced story sounds like it was the local party house so it's probable that a lack of sobriety took part in the lack of survival.

Caber there are definitely stats where oilfield commuting deaths are considered work-related. My son is 'patch & he was forced to take the Schlumberger safety driver test to try to reduce 'work' related driving fatalities.

I just heard from one of the guys headed up to Syncrude, that their bus was turned around at Wandering river. My friends at Syncrude are out of their coveralls and are standing by indoors awaiting further orders. Heavy ash is apparently falling on the plant, and the smoke is extremely thick. The guys at Noralta Lodge are being told to be ready in case they need to evacuate.

Camps North of Ft Mac are now under mandatory evac. Those using the AOSTRA road are specifically mentioned.

Is it from air quality or from risk of fire?

I could see if it was travelling in a work vehicle for work purposes, but personally I draw the line at whether or not a person was 'on the clock' when the incident occurs. If companies want to include off-shift statistics in their numbers that's fine by me though, I do commend any safety training they wish to provide to increase driver (and passenger) safety.

No fire but the person fell asleep.
I don't care about statistics and if it is a shame that people died but they were a long way away fom that fire and the flight risk was over .

The flight risk was over? The traffic levels were normal on that highway that day? The nerve racking evacuation probably had nothing to do with the alertness of the driver? Just because the risk of their car lighting on fire was over does not mean that the conditions were normal and had nothing to do with the fire...
But go ahead and blame their deaths on their inability to drive if that is what you want to do... Sure sounds bad when you phrase it that way instead of just saying it wasn't the because of the fire doesn't it...

We do/did. The highway of death is a contributing factor into why many of the companies up north started flying a majority of their workers in.
That is a completely different situation though because the people in those accidents chose to drive those days. This case is different because the people didn't choose to drive, they were forced to drive.
Should they have pulled over to sleep(if the rumours are true)? Yeah but we have all been there and most of us would try to force ourselves to keep going in circumstances like that. I bet there were thousands of tired drivers behind the wheel that day.
What would be interesting to know is how many non fatal accidents there were there that day. Same as a regular day? If there were 3 times more accidents on those highways that day would you guys still argue this death had nothing to do with the fire even if most of those accidents were not right at Fort McMurray?

When are we going to get some good rain. Come on mother nature, give us some love.
Talked with a friend in Fox Creek today, his trailer is loaded, hooked to the truck and ready to roll on a moments notice. Wife and 2 kids, he's a little worried.

I see at least one of the camps(Black Sands) has been affected. Man it is really going to screw our economy up if a bunch of the camps/projects up there are wrecked.

After proclaiming that the firefighters had things under control when he refused foreign assistance, I can't help but wonder what Trudeau's response will be.

We need rain, water bombers won't do anything against wind and a fire that is 350,000 hectares in size.
I'm also pretty sure the people affected by this are getting tired of people trying to use it as a political stick. I know I am.

From what I heard this is a different fire up there now, not the same one that went through the town.
I wonder if there isn't some arson involved in this. Multiple fires been in the area and not to mention the arson at Mayerthorpe and Slave Lake fire years ago was arson too.

A house explosion in a residential Fort McMurray neighbourhood badly damaged seven homes Monday night.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has confirmed the explosion happened in a home on McConachie Crescent in the Dickinsfield neighbourhood.
In a separate incident, a fire in the Thickwood neighbourhood destroyed a fourplex. Three other units across from Father Mercredi were involved in the fire at Silin Forest Road.
Thickwood is located north of the Athabasca River, south of the Timberlea neighbourhood.
The fire and explosion are under investigation, the municipality said Tuesday morning.

I've spoken to many residents now that believe this to also be the case. Peace river fires and Mayerthorpe fires - both declared arson. It's only the followers of this forum that are looking the other way.

Arson wouldn't surprise me, with all the oil haters around here lately. I just hope that isn't the case.

I've spoken to countless people from the area who believe it is. The fact that the media is ignoring it, pretty much confirms it.
