Default Protective Gear When Dealing With Game

Who here uses protective equipment (plastic gloves, eye protection etc.) when skinning, gutting an animal? Never gave it much thought before, just do it and then rinse off your hands with water. Just read North American hunters post in another thread about always wearing protective gear and got me thinking. How many actually do it and is there a real risk of catching anything or do people do it to avoid the mess?

a sharp knife is a safe knife

that's about all i do.

i actually used to wear a stainless butchers glove but it gives you blisters sometimes and it's hard to keep your hands warm in the animal when you're wearing gloves

That's true, but household gloves come lined, that a tad better than just bare hands, and they save a need to find a way to wash your hands after. Totally agree on your knife remark tho.

I've always wondered about this. I'd say every 3rd time i cut myself with the knife when i'm skinning the dear and wonder if i'm going to grow antlers.

So far nothing...

Just roll up the sleeves and get at it. I always have rubber gloves in my bag but I forget to put them on prior to getting bloody.

I try to remember to wipe the blood off my thumb and finger before I take a chew of snuff, that's about as protective as it gets. Unfortunately I usually forget

I use blue rubber cut resistant gloves that acklands sells, I had a set from work in my truck three years ago when I got a buck and thought wth, give them a try. On top of being cut resistant, they grip the hide amazingly well. I can basically pull off half the hide with only a slice here and there. I won't be out hunting without them again!

Laytex gloves as for some reason the blood from a fresh kill feels like parisites are crawling anywhere the blood has touched my skin. Doc says I'm allergic to the enzymes in fresh blood.

I keep gloves handy more for the mess than anything. Nothing like washing your hands with snow after they're already frozen....

No gloves here unless its November and cold. Then I use those brown little cloth gloves that come in a pack of 12 to keep the mitts and fingers warm. When done they go in the garbage.

Same here, just gloves (nitrile- from Costco), I try to keep them over my shirt sleeves in case of ticks.

If you gut your animal, try the shoulder length ones from UFA, heard they work great for keeping clean. If you do the gutless method, standard gloves are sufficient.

If it's cold I will wear whatever gloves I had on while hunting that day. I put them in the wash pile and the wife throws them out! Otherwise, just roll up my sleeves and dig in!

I always bring rubber gloves, but never seem to put them on

I've been lucky enough to only nick myself a couple of times.
Now my partner on the other hand, he should wear stainless gloves!
I cut him open often. Like every time.

He still helps though. Good friends are awesome.

Same hear.
The only time I wish I had gloves/full hazmat suit was skinning a stinky black bear that was full of lice......yikes. Ended up dragging it to the river and letting him soak for an hr. Now I carry a can of Konk when hunting bears, kills the creepy crawly's dead.

Default gloves

I know some guys that wear gloves,if you think it's going to protect you from something harmful it's your call. When I clean my kill and that I know I am going to eat it gloves are the last thing on my mind, you can cut yourself just as bad with gloves on.IF you do open up your kill and the blood has a different smell and and darker colour be careful, look for abnormalities in the organs large kindney ,wieird looking liver ,and lungs, remember you have to eat this so if it grosses you out in the field,it might not be that good looking on your plate. Not all animals are healthy, when moose hunting look for that healthy shiny black coat,if you see one and you know it's young but their is grey hair on top of the neck and dull brown looking fur think twice about pulling the trigger. That's all part of hunting, the killing part is small factor.

I try to wear rubber gloves, not so much from fear of disease but simply that my hands are clean when I'm finished.

yeah, I can see the bow and shotgun. Bow for bear defence means he'll die 5 or 10 minutes after he kills you.
