Default Matchayaw Lake

Hi there guys!

Please welcome the fresh episode out of Matchayaw Lake, where me and my buddy were last Saturday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsOf3x1Dh4Q

Video made in the new format for me, unusual from my other videos. Please tell me what you think. Would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for watching!

P.S. Does anyone know why that ice is red?

Not sure what caused it to turn red but it was like that when I was there just before freeze up. Nasty water quality and it made a mess of my kayak... First time I have never seen red water, algae or whatever it was.

Some spooky stuff happening at Devil's Lake this Halloween!
A bloom of Oscillatoria sp. has turned the lake bright pink. This species of cyanobacteria can be highly toxic and caution should be exercised around the bloom. See the photos below for an image of the surface bloom and under-the-microscope views.
A health advisory has been posted by Alberta Health Services at http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/news/Page14100.aspx

I couldn't find what he was trying to link to(must be a dead link now).

Oscillatoria has a bunch of types but the red one is oscillatoria rubescens.

The following page has a few pictures at the end that gives an idea of what it looked like out there. It was starting to clear up when I was there but definitely had that red/purple look.

My hat off to you, I get there around 3:30pm most days and cant seem to get anything through the ice using ripping raps and darters.... I do mark a lot of fish though.

Thank you!

You will have more luck if you set a tip up with a smelt. Mean time you can try using different lures. I would suggest spoons, also rattling works good.
And bites are better in the morning. 9-11 best for pike.

The red,/purple stuff is still on Devil's Lake. I was out today and found it worse on the south side of the lake. It doesn't look like any algae I've ever seen...more like food colouring. Has anyone heard of a spill upstream of Devil's on the sturgeon.
