Default Fishing the Shuswap's

Hello all,

Me and the new wife are taking off on our honeymoon on saturday. The plan is for 2 weeks of tenting from cranbrook, to kelowna, and up to the shuswaps. spending a few days in each area. We are curious as to any fishing tips for the shuswap area. We are up for any fish. Most likely we will be fishing from shore. Any tips on areas or lakes to look at would be great. Thanks in advance.

Most tips I can give you would involve a boat. If you have access to one, PM me, and I can give you a rundown. If you are fishing from shore, try and find where a creek or river flows in, and fish at the mouth (check regs, though). I do know that there can be some very good dollie fishing at these spots, and generally a good sized streamer type fly (I use a white bow river bugger that works wonders) will do the trick. You can also use the usual spoons and larger spinners if you are fishing with a spinning rod.

There aren't that many places to tent on shuswap other than marine access, unless you want to drive way up around the north shore towards seymour arm. There are a few places close to salmon arm (sandy point or pierre's point) but lots of people and lots of rules.

Beer bottle bay / paradise point are nice fishing beaches. They are at the the far end of sunnybrae. From shore, cast a big krocodile (brass or silver with the red or orange stripe works well) or a big super duper. If you feel like it you can get out onto the log booms in the area - the fishing is always good out there. Just jig 10 - 20 feet below the surface or cast off the edge.

PM me if you have questions; I've lived in Salmon Arm for 20 years...

hey guys,

Thanks for the info. We are probably staying in the scotch creek area. My sister and her family are staying there so we will probably stay somewhere near them. My wife and I have never been there and we are kind of winging it as we go. There is a chance we may get out on a boat. What kind of fish is it best to go after there? rainbows? lakers?
cheers

if you are at scotch creek, troll around copper island after dinner with spoons or apex lures with some in line weights. lots of fish there. you can rent boats at the two marinas around blind bay if you need to.
during the heat of the day, you'd need downriggers and have to go deep right now. good luck.

Agreed on trolling an apex. A pink lady will get it down if needed. I've caught some nice rainbows about ten feet below the surface in the middle of the day in 35 degree weather.

Rainbows are best, but jig a spoon on the bottom and lakers might hit as well. It a good way to fish if you still want to swim and splash around cause you'll be fishing very deep.

We fish the Shuswap every fall in a derby and we use downriggers with reasonable success. My buddy has a 12 ft. aluminum out there and I use dipsy divers in it and I'm surprised how well they work. Rainbows/lakers/dolly's are what I'm after. You can catch lots of small rainbows and kokanee on/near the surface but they are small. If you get a chance to fish White Lake (just north of Salmon Arm) you can do well there with flies. Have fun. Rick.
