Unhappy Nasty Wasp!!!

We were in the garden today and I reached over to pick up what I thought was a big grasshopper on the bottom of a leaf, as Hazel was collecting them... Glad I noticed the yellow antenae on it before i grabbed him, because here is the bug.....

Greater horntail wasp..... bet that could have hurt...

Kids made him a nice home in a bug jar, hope he stays in....

These things act like they the meanest insect around! They are remarkably aggressive and they do look pretty nasty for a harmless insect.

I did some research online a few years ago and found out they were harmless. I did not bother to tell the other guys at work though!

Use caution when dealing with the wasps as they can deliver nasty stings when they feel threatened.

My brother to me while in Nara (Japan) "Hey sister, come here quick!!" So I go over to see what he is looking at. "See that giant wasp??" I can hear it buzzing as it is flying around, hard to miss since it is so big. "They kill about 30 people a year over here".... thanks brother, always keeping me in mind.
